Message from the Dean
When the first students of the Lee Kong Chian
School of Medicine arrive in August 2013 they
will find that extraordinary opportunities
lie ahead. They will be joining a School with
ambitious aims to redefine medicine. Their
experiences over the next five years will
equip them to reach the highest professional
standards in the care they give to patients.
They will complete their studies as confident
and competent medical practitioners, ready
to transform healthcare to meet the needs
of Singapore.
Since LKCMedicine was established in 2010
as a joint medical school between Nanyang
Technological University and Imperial College
London, we have been developing a modern
curriculum that is characterised by its innovative
approaches. Students will be taught by worldclass
experts, working in teams in a high-tech
environment and gaining experience from the
start in hospitals, patients’ homes and in all
settings where healthcare is delivered. They
will learn through simulations, refining their
skills with the assistance of actors, and will
benefit from extensive use of technology,
accessing eLearning materials through their
iPad anywhere and at any time.
We aim to produce graduates who will excel
in their career path, whether they choose
to become a surgeon, a clinical scientist or
a physician working in an underprivileged
environment, or they take another one of
the diverse routes that will be open to them.
As the demands on healthcare change, with
people living longer and a rise in long-term
diseases, LKCMedicine doctors will be well
prepared to respond, putting each patient’s
individual needs at the centre of their care.
With a thorough understanding of the scientific
basis of medicine they will be able to continue
their learning, identifying how new findings
could lead to new treatments. Exposure to
engineering and business, gained thanks to the
School’s emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching,
will mean graduates are willing to embrace new
approaches and new technologies in the care
they deliver. LKCMedicine, with the support of
the Ministry of Education and our healthcare
partners, is committed to giving an outstanding
education to students who are passionate about
pursuing a career in medicine. Alongside this,
we strive to build on the research strengths of
Imperial and NTU to make medical discoveries
that will benefit society. There is an exciting
journey ahead and we are seeking Singapore’s
brightest talents to join us.
