ACCOMMODATION IN KARESUANDO SANTA FACT: In Canada, Santa Claus has his own zip/post code: HOH OHO. Karesuando On the edge of an unspoiled wilderness deep inside the Arctic Circle, the picturesque village of Karesuando is set on the edge of a vast wilderness where beauty, nature and wildlife abound. Karesuando is a charming village on the border between Finland and Sweden, which means you are able to walk from your hotel into a different country! The main village sits on the Swedish side of the River Muonio, while the Davvi Arctic Lodge is in Finland. The Davvi Arctic Lodge This simple hotel is set on a secluded hillside on the edge of Karesuando, allowing you to savour the tranquillity of this beautiful, unspoiled region. The centrepiece of the hotel is its distinctive restaurant, which provides spectacular panoramic views. The circular design of the restaurant is inspired by the shape of the Sámi reindeer corral. The Davvi offers four choices of accommodation. The Hotel Rooms The Davvi Arctic Lodge hotel rooms are set on two floors in a wing that extends from the main building. There are rooms sleeping two or three, as well as larger family rooms which are simply furnished and comfortable. Please note that if the family rooms are utilised to their maximum capacity, storage space will be limited. All rooms are en suite, although some of the bathrooms (shower, WC) are small. The Cabins The wooden cabins are conveniently situated within the hotel grounds. The traditional timber-built buildings are cosy and all are en suite (shower, WC) with a private sauna. Most cabins are semidetached and sleep three or four, with one double or two single beds plus a sofa bed for up to two children in an open-plan area. All cabins are located just metres from the main hotel building, where meals are taken. The Fell House The Fell House provides spacious accommodation that is ideal for families. The two-bedroom family rooms sleep 5-6, with one double bedroom, one twin bedroom, and a sofa bed in the sitting room. The three-bedroom family rooms accommodate 7-8, with one double bedroom, two twin bedrooms, and a sofa bed in the sitting room. The Fell House is located approximately 150m from the main Davvi Arctic Lodge hotel building, where meals are taken. It is connected by a well-lit, purpose-built footpath through the forest and may not be suitable for people with walking difficulties. All Fell House accommodation has private facilities (shower, WC) and TV with DVD player. Aurora House The Davvi Arctic Lodge also offers comfortable designer accommodation for those who would like to enjoy something extra special. The Aurora House takes your Arctic experience to new levels, with a choice of superior and deluxe rooms to choose from, each equipped with added comforts for your stay. With a total of just four rooms, these exclusive rooms are perfect for those looking for something extra special. This is sumptuous Scandinavian chic, a standard unparalleled within the Davvi Arctic Lodge and rarely found Davvi cabin elsewhere in Lapland. For the ultimate in comfort, the whole house can be booked, offering two spacious suites, each with their own private entrance. Deluxe Room: The Deluxe room is perfect for two. This cosy, double room comes complete with underfloor heating, free standing bath, separate rain shower, double sinks, sauna and modern wood burning stove. The room is accessed via a lobby shared with just one other room. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided. Superior Room: The superior room offers spacious, contemporary design. Both underfloor heating and a wood burning stove can be found inside this room, along with tea and coffee making facilities. There is a rain shower but no bath. Aurora Suite: For the ultimate in comfort, the full suite can be used. With the deluxe room as the master bedroom, the superior room adapts into a chic living room, also providing a second bathroom. With the full suite taken, you will also benefit from a private entrance and cloakroom to store your thermal outwear. Davvi Lounge

A 20-minute walk from the Finnish border, the location feels genuinely remote and offers superb views over both a lake and the Muonio River. The rooms are relatively simple and cosy, while the hotel boasts a good range of facilities including a bar and restaurant that offers hearty local dishes. The Arctic Star is in a good location to explore Karesuando by foot, dropping in at Sweden’s most northerly church, paying a visit to the local museum and crossing regularly between Sweden and Finland! It also offers the chance to follow in some very famous footsteps, as the Dalai Lama stayed at the Arctic Star on a visit to Lapland. The hotel has recently undergone a programme of refurbishment and improvements and there are now three standards of room available: Standard While these value-for-money twin and double rooms have not been refurbished in recent years, they are spacious and cosy with en-suite facilities. These rooms can accommodate a third person on a fold-up bed, if required. There are also standard rooms in a separate building in the hotel grounds, from which you may step out of your room and gaze up at the Northern Lights. Superior These twin and double rooms enjoy a view from the front of the hotel towards Kaarevaara Hill and the nearby lake. These rooms are the largest that the Arctic Star provides. The en-suite shower rooms of superior rooms were refurbished to a comfortable standard in 2011. Davvi Arctic Lodge Arctic Star Premium The Arctic Star’s premium rooms underwent a full refurbishment in the summer of 2012, masterminded by a team of Parisian architects. Refurbished to a high standard, these double rooms feature underfloor heating, and most have glass panels between the rain shower room and bedroom and feature mirrors.
