Jordan’s capital is a bustling, modern city, originally
set on seven hills. Many of its buildings are only a
few decades old, with some exceptions dating
from the 1920s to the 1940s, demonstrating the
styles which were in vogue during the mandate
era. Some remnants of older history are still
visible, such as the Roman theatre around which
the downtown area grew. On a hill is the Citadel,
along with a patchwork of Roman, Byzantine and
Umayyad ruins. The Citadel is also the home of
the Jordanian Archaeological Museum. This has
displays about the Dead Sea Scrolls and other
finds, some dating to prehistory, though many
have been relocated to the new Jordan Museum
in downtown Amman. Other museums and
galleries abound, including the Royal Automobile
Museum, established by King Abdullah II.
