Borobudur, JavaAn introduction to our Island HoppingIndonesia group tourWith years of experience operating in Indonesia, wehave designed this tour to take in some of our favouriteplaces from over the years. Indonesia is so vast that evenvisiting the four main places this tour takes in, you willstill travel some 1,200+ miles once in the country! You will start with a visit to Yogyakarta in central Java, the cultural heart of the island. Visit the Sultan'sPalace before escaping the city with a gentle cycle ridedown through small villages surrounded by paddy fieldsand arrive at the gates of the ancient Hindu templecomplex of Prambanan on your bike. Move on toBorobudur, the largest Buddhist relic in the word, whereyou will see the sunrise from this 8 th century monument.Sure to be a highlight is Tanjung Puting National Park insouthern Kalimantan, home to over 5,000 wild orangutanand numerous other animals. You will spend threedays exploring here, making your way through thenarrow backwaters under the rainforest canopy.Moving on to eastern Java you will visit the spice marketsand mosques of Surabaya, wide leafy boulevards andDutch architecture of Malang and the awe-inspiring vistaof Mount Bromo's smoking volcanic crater at dawn.Flying on to Bali you will end the trip in the beautifultown of Ubud, known for art, music, architecture anddance. Explore the quieter north of the island from here, including the stunning Lake Bratan. Our Indonesia group tour specialistsSarah Howard01993 838 119sarah.howard:@audleytravel.comJack Tydeman01993 838 118jack.tydeman@audleytravel.comSarah and Jack have both been with Audley for over fiveyears and are incredibly knowledgeable about travel inIndonesia. They have both encountered orang-utan inKalimantan, visited Borobudur and Mount Bromo atsunrise; and travelled through the island of Bali onnumerous occasions. For anyone keen to add on more time in Indonesia posttour, you are in very good hands as they have also beento more far flung islands including the jungles of Sumatra, funeral ceremonies and diving in Sulawesi, and trackingdown the prehistoric Komodo Dragon on Flores.ClimateIndonesia straddles the equator and thus has the benefitof warm weather year round. October is the tail end ofthe dry season and you will hopefully only see a fewshowers in the day and hear the odd thunderstorm atnight. As a topical rainforest, Tanjung Puting doesgenerally see a little more rainfall and generally speakingin Indonesia, the further east you go the longer the dryseason lasts.4 Meet our specialists

In a worst case scenario amendments to the airline and route you are travelling will benecessary. Our representatives will be there to assist you if you encounter any of these problems as theyare best placed to help you at the time. For domestic flights in Indonesia, Audley will always endeavour to use EU approved airlines - GarudaAirlines, Mandala Airlines, Airfast and Ekspres Transportasi Antarbenua (operating as PremiAir), MetroBatavia and Indonesia Air Asia - where appropriate as all other airlines in the country are subject to an EUoperating ban. Many of the non EU approved airlines have in fact passed the strict safety requirements of neighbouringcountries they fly to including Singapore, Australia and Japan and the operating ban only prevents themfrom flying in to EU airspace, of which none of these airlines have ever had routes. On this tour you willfly from Java to Kalimantan on a non EU approved airline as none of the airlines listed above fly this route. We recommend you read current FCO advice and ensure you are comfortable with this. Please checkyour travel insurance for validity if flying on these routes - Campbell Irvine Insurance Brokers are happy toprovide coverage starting from £99pp for an annual multi-trip policy.Your specialist will send you an email on booking that states that we have given you this information andwe need you to reply to this in order for us to process your booking. In fact almost two thirds of Indonesia's population live here on an islandthat covers just 7% of the country's total land mass. No wonder that the trafficjams can be so solid that, for many, they've become home. Many cities have thelook of a modern metropolis but still have patches of sugar cane, water is sold bythe can and most of the hotels have experienced some sort of scandal orrevolution, or a visit from Charlie Chaplin or Joseph Conrad. The temples andvolcanos are some of the most spectacular you will see and away from the citiesthe horizon is always pimpled with mountains and you are never far from the rice, which glows like green fire.Yogyakarta introductionThe city, which is usually referred to as ‘Jogja’, is the most popular destination forthose travelling in Java and is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding areaincluding the ancient relics of Borobudur and Prambanan. Jogja is known as thecultural capital of Java and as such has a multitude of worthwhile places to visit, most of which are conveniently found in the walled Kraton in the old town.Hotel lunch at the Phoenixgroup lunchOnce you have checked in to the Phoenix and freshened up you can enjoy awelcome lunch at the hotel.Dinner at a local restaurantgroup dinnerAfter you have freshened up and perhaps had a bit of a siesta, spa treatment or dipin the pool, you will meet up to head out for a welcome dinner at one of ourfavourite local restaurants. Here you will have chance to meet the group anddiscuss the arrangements for your time in Jogja.14 Itinerary in detail

Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourSunday07 October, 2012Phoenix Hotel,YogyakartaMorning city tour of the old towngroup excursion with lunch in a local restaurantThe tour gives you an opportunity to see some of the cultural sights that Jogja's oldtown is famous for. You will spend most of your time at the kraton (the Palace ofthe Sultans), still the hub of traditional life and the centre of the old town. Thekraton was built by Prince Mangkubumi in 1755 who the following year changed hisname to Sultan Hamengkubuwono (the Universe on the Lap of the King). Thewalled city of the kraton is home to around 25,000 people with over 1,000 of theseserving the Sultan. In the centre of the kraton you will find the Bangsal Kencana(Golden Pavilion) which is an excellent example of the grand elegance that typifiedJavanese architecture during this period.Near to the kraton you will find the Taman Sari complex, also know as the watercastle (or the old Dutch name of waterkasteel). This once served as a pleasurepark of pools for the sultan and his cohorts and was completed in 1765. Althoughmost the site lies damaged from war and earthquake, the bathing pools have beenrestored. Next door to the Taman sari is the bird market which you may findsomewhat chilling due to the many hundreds of birds on sale as pets. There is alsoa smaller section where you will see snakes and other reptiles. Ask your guide totake you up Pasar Ngasem where from the walls of the Taman Sari you can enjoy agood view out over Jogja.Dancer from the Ramayana, JavaFor history buffs, visiting the Sono Budoyo museum in front of the kraton you canadmire the extensive collection of antiques and historical artefacts. As well as thecollection inside, the building itself (designed by Van Kartsen) is another interestingexample of Javanese architecture. The area is also known for its batik, a unique artusing beeswax, paraffin and a multitude of dyes to create the colourful cloth. From the kraton you will walk up Jalan Malioboro where you can see the souvenirshops selling all manner of gifts from Ramayana masks and puppets to 'I Love Jogja't-shirts! It should take around 20 minutes to reach Jogja's main market of PasarBeringharjo. Here you have the chance to explore the two floor building which ispiled high with batik and other clothing as well as huge stalls selling local fruits, vegetables and spices. You will finish the morning with lunch in a local cafe.Ramayana ballet at Prambanangroup excursion with dinner in a local restaurantThe Ramayana story presented in this performance is similar to that engraved onPrambanan temple. The famous Hindu story is summarised in four scenes and theentire story is presented in a series of dance movements done by beautiful dancersaccompanied by gamelan music. You are invited to really plunge into the story andobserve each movement of the dancers to know the course of the story. There isno dialog among the dancers and it is only the storyteller who describes the courseof the story through Javanese songs (there will be a handout given so you can tryto follow). There are two places in Jogja where the Ramayana ballet is performed. First, inPurawisata Yogyakarta where it has been performed for 25 years. The other placeto see the ballet is the open stage (and closed-stage in bad weather) in thePrambanan temple complex. We will try to ensure you see the performance atPrambanan, however the dates can (and do) change at late notice and it is alsoweather dependent.Dinner is included in a local restaurant after the show.Itinerary in detail 15

Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourMonday08 October, 2012Saraswati Borobudur,YogyakartaPrambanan, JavaCycle ride to Prambanangroup excursion with lunch in a local restaurantPlease pack up your luggage this morning as it will be taken to your next hotelwhile you enjoy the day.Take a leisurely cycle ride through the beautiful central Javanese countryside andsleepy villages. After an early start you will begin by stopping at Gunung Merapi,'Always on Fire', where from the Kaliadem village you will hopefully enjoy amagnificent view of this very active volcano and see the ravines which the moltenstreams of lava created. After this your guide will get you geared up on your bikes (helmets and waterprovided). As you pass through the various villages and countryside you will haveplenty of opportunities to stop for photos and your guide will also be able to showyou the locals engaging in various activities such as tobacco harvesting, rice farmingand snake fruit plantations. You will also stop at various small temples that areregularly unearthed in the area and you can see the original carvings which maydate back as far as the 8th century.Once you have reached the plains at the bottom of Merapi you will reach CandiPlaosan, just a short distance from Prambanan. Candi Plaosan was not only one ofthe last major Buddhist temples to be constructed before Hinduism and then Islambecame the dominant religions but it was also the largest in scope. Because of itssomewhat isolated location, this temple complex has not received the same level ofinterest that has befallen central Java's more famous temples of Borobudur andPrambanan. However, those willing to venture a bit off the beaten path will find avisit to Candi Plaosan to be well worth the effort. The complex itself is made up of174 small buildings, 116 are stupas and 58 are shrines. Many of the buildings haveinscriptions dating from the 9th century and the detailed reliefs, restored in 2010,are incredible to see.The huge Prambanan complex was built in the middle of the 9th century, about 50years after the construction of Borobudur. Unfortunately there is very little earlyhistory about the complex but it is thought to have been constructed tocommemorate the return of a Hindu dynasty to Java. It is thought that during thelatter stages of construction a powerful earthquake or volcanic eruption struckcentral Java causing many deaths. This was believed to be a message from the Godsand Prambanan was quickly abandoned as the population fled to east Java. Similar toBorobudur the temple complex lay buried in layers of ash and it was only in 1811that a surveyor in the service of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, came upon thetemples by chance. Despite their rediscovery Prambanan remained neglected fordecades until reconstruction was started in earnest in the 1930s. In 1991 thetemple complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and now most ofthe temples within the inner compound have been restored however work remainson going following an earthquake in 2006.Although there are 237 temples in the Prambanan site the inner compoundcontains the most beautiful and best restored. The relief panels found on thesetemples are of incredible detail and the 47 metre high Shiva temple in the centralcompound is a real master of construction. Shiva is known as the Destroyer andinside the temple are several chambers containing statues of Shiva and other HinduGods related to Shiva. Either side of the Shiva temple are two other templesdedicated to Brahma the Creator and Vishnu the Keeper. Please note the route is largely downhill so a high level of physical fitness is notrequired, however these small roads can have heavy traffic so keep your wits aboutyou, your guide will be with you all the time and your vehicle will be following.Lunch will be taken near Prambanan itself.16 Itinerary in detail

Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourClose by and within the Prambanan archeological park, are the lesser known Sewuand Lumbung temples, all Buddhist, demonstrating the religious harmonyexperienced in Indonesia throughout the ages. Candi Sewu complex is 800 metersnorth of Prambanan itself and is the second largest Buddhist temple in Java,Borobudur bring the largest. Candi Sewu predates Prambanan and was most likelyoriginally built in the 8th century. Candi Lumbung is a Buddhist temple built around850AD by the Mataram Dynasty, and consists of a single central temple surroundedby 16 smaller temples.Depending on the group, you then have the option of visiting Ratu Boko. Thehistory of Ratu Boko is unclear, and much of what is understood about the sitecomes from inscriptions and even folklore. The oldest inscription found on the siteis believed to date back to 792AD, naming the site Abhayagiri Wihara.Archaeologists believe that the ruler of the Saliendra Dynasty between 760-780,Rakai Panangkaran, built Ratu Boko after he resigned from his leadership to findspiritual peace and concentrate on religious matters. Abhayagiri Wihara means‘peaceful Buddhist monastery’ and the site chosen has fairly spectacular views. OfBuddhist faith, Rakai Panangkaran was also responsible for the building ofBorobudur temple during his reign. A mix of Buddhist and Hindu structures arefound on the complex, including the Buddhist Dyani Budha, Stupika, TerakotaTablet, and a gold and silver plaque with a Buddhist inscription. Three small Hindutemples, as well as Yoni, a Durga statue, a Ganesha statue and a plaque with aninscription to Rudra, the other name for the god Siwa (shiva). At the end of the tour you will travel west of Jogja to your hotel in the surroundsof Borobudur.Tuesday09 October, 2012Saraswati Borobudur,YogyakartaSunrise at Borobudurgroup excursionYou will leave your hotel at around 5am for the short walk to the 8th centuryBuddhist relic of Borobudur. Find yourself a quiet spot to sit and wait for the sunto rise over the horizon enjoying the serene and spiritual atmosphere that seemsto have infiltrated every rock. As you look out to the hills and forests surroundingyou it isn't hard to imagine how explorers must have felt when they stumbled outof the forest in 1814 to find such a sight lost to the world for almost 500 years. The awe-inspiring monument features the largest and most complete collection ofBuddhist relief sculptures on the walls of its seven terraces - all of which detail thestory of Buddhist cosmology. It was thought to take 75 years to complete andalthough it's exact purpose is still unclear it was evidently a shrine to Lord Buddhaand guide to the noble path of the Buddha. It is thought that Borobudur wasabandoned following the 14th century decline of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms inJava, and the Javanese conversion to Islam. It was then completely covered in adeep layer of volcanic ash following the eruption of nearby Mount Merapi andworldwide knowledge of its existence was only sparked in 1814 by Sir ThomasStamford Raffles, the then British ruler of Java.Borobudur, JavaFollowing your trip to Borobudur you will stop to see a local village at work.Perched in a valley beside a river, the village of Candijero has a great setting. It hasnumerous cottage industries you can see as well as the opportunity to meet someof the locals. You may see people tending the fields, making noodles or tofu formarket and constructing small hand crafted souvenirs. The village works with alocal tourism initiative and this is a good way to provide a small amount of extraincome for the local population. The smiles and waves you receive from everyoneyou pass are a sight to treasure and the rural atmosphere is a refreshing changefrom in Java's normally crowded towns and cities.Itinerary in detail 17

The main street of each townis usually a river and there are probably more boats that cars. Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourPangkalan Bun introductionPangkalan Bun is the gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park and a pleasant stopover if travelling elsewhere in Kalimantan. This tidy town with its wide streets, attractive residences and warm and friendly locals creates a convivial and appealingatmosphere.Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan, IndonesiaPangkalan Bun to Tanjung Puting National Parkgroup transfer with lunch on boardFrom the airport you will travel around 25 minutes by car to the small port townof Kumai. At Kumai you will be welcomed on board your Klotok boat by thefriendly crew and begin your journey upstream. The first stage of your journey is along the main shipping route that leads out tothe Java sea and you will pass several trade and passenger boats, as well as thesimple shacks that the Dayak tribes have built on the waterfront. After about 30minutes you will escape the river traffic and head up a tributary called the 'Big'Sekonyer River. This river forms the border of Tanjung Puting National Park andslowly narrows and fills with mangroves and palms as you journey along. The openupper deck allows you to soak up the sunshine and look out on to the rainforestwhere you may see proboscis monkey, crab-eating macaque, false gharial crocodileand perhaps even your first orang-utan!On route you are likely to see all manner of wildlife so having your binoculars andcamera handy is a good idea!Tanjung Puting introductionStaying in Tanjung Puting is something truly memorable. Making your way throughthe national park, along its narrow backwaters under the jungle canopy, you get aninstant feeling of being back to nature. You are captivated completely by the purityof the air, the openness of the night sky with the most remarkable view of theMilky Way, the magnificence and dignity of the gentle orang-utan, the thunderingdownpours that instantly cool the air, and the clarity of the brilliant crimsonsunsets. The national park itself is mainly composed of low lying swampy terrain with acomplex pattern of black water rivers running through it. Mangrove swamps linethe rivers with the forest canopy developing away from here up to 150 feet high.Short treks through the forest generally follow ranger's trails but if you want toexplore further a field you will be creating your own path through some ofBorneo's most pristine jungle.Itinerary in detail 19

Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourMost people visit Tanjung Puting to see the 5,000 plus orang-utan that are spreadwide across the 4,000 square kilometre park. There are three feeding stations inthe park and they all provide supplementary food to the orang-utan. This meansthey cannot remain wholly dependent on the feeding sites and are insteadencouraged to explore further a field. The orang-utan that do come to the feedingsites are generally mothers with young offspring and recently released animals thathave been rescued or have been orphaned after loggers killed their parents. Thefeeding takes place on platforms a few metres above the forest floor so they don'tfeel so vulnerable. You will sit on fallen trunks only about 10 metres away fromthem and will have rangers along side you. The orang-utan may come to theplatform from anywhere in the jungle (there are no areas of the park fenced off forrehabilitation) so you have to be aware to move quickly if you are between themand the food, or indeed if you are between a male and a female. Your guide andrangers will be there to look out for you but these animals can be unpredictablewhen agitated and they have an extremely long reach and strong grip that hasinjured people in the past. The park is generally seen as being much less touristy than Bukit Lawang in Sumatraand Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. This is largely down to the difficultiesin reaching the park and the fact that Dr Galdikas who campaigned for the Park'sopening in 1982 has been a strong influence in protecting the area fromdevelopment. This all means that the park is an amazing experience for those whowant to enjoy the rainforest as it was meant to be seen; unspoilt, tranquil areashome to a fascinating array of animal and plant life.Aside from the orang-utan, some of the larger animal species that you may see inTanjung Puting include proboscis monkey, gibbon, rare clouded leopard, huge wildboar, civet, Malaysian sun bear, crocodile, several kinds of deer and a type of wildcattle known as banteng. For the bird lover there are over 220 species here, including the symbolic hornbill, kingfisher, white egret and several otherendangered water birds. There are also numerous types of fish, leech, snake, frogand other reptilian life lurking in the swampy grounds.Sensible clothing is of course a must for your time in the rainforest with well wornboots high on the order as heavy rains may fall at any time of the year. This is amalarial zone so tablets should be taken and 'deet' spray and other preventionmethods are strongly recommended.Camp Leakey:Camp Leakey is located within Tanjung Puting National Park and was established in1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas. It was named after the legendary anthropologist, LouisLeakey, who was both mentor and an inspiration to Dr. Galdikas as well as Drs.Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. Originally consisting of just two huts, Camp Leakeyis now an assemblage of permanent wooden structures designed to provide a basefor scientists, staff, students and PHPA guards.Over the years, Camp Leakey has supported the research efforts of dozens ofscientists and students including graduate students from Indonesia (UniveristasNasional & Universitas Gajamada) and North America. Projects have ranged fromresearch into orang-utan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkeybehaviour and ecology, to studies of orang-utan sign language abilities andcognition, to leech behaviour and riverine ecology.20 Itinerary in detail

Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourA 200 metre boardwalk made of ironwood was constructed by the provincialgovernment in the 1970's to bypass the seasonal swamps that can isolate the highground at Camp Leakey from the river. Used by orang-utan as well as people, theboardwalk may be the first place you will meet one of Camp Leakey's "bicultural"great ape residents. These orang-utan are the last of the ex-captive orang-utanreleased into the nearby forest during the 1970's and early 1980's. Now, orangutanrehabilitation is conducted in other areas of the park, but the Camp Leakeyresidents, mostly females and their offspring, spend their time both in the forestand in Camp. They provide visitors a chance to view free-ranging orang-utan closeup. If you wish to donate to or join the Orang-utan Foundation or just learn moreabout their work please visit www.orangutan.org.Proboscis monkey in Tanjung Puting, KalimantanThursday11 October, 2012Rimba Lodge, TanjungPutingPondok Tanggui and Camp Leakey orang-utan postsgroup excursion with lunch on boardYou will wake early this morning and enjoy breakfast at the lodge before boardingyour boat. This is a Government and NGO sponsored sitethat is attempting to reseed a part of the national park largely destroyed by illegallogging and forest fires. It is quite amazing to see the work involved in trying torecreate rainforest that has taken thousands of years to develop. Your guide willhelp you chat to the local villagers working here and you may come acrossvolunteers from other countries that are here to help.Slightly further downstream is Tanjung Harapan (Post 1) where you can travel in tothe jungle to see the feeding at 3pm. This is the smallest of the posts and sees veryfew visitors. It is a real favourite for Audley, the local family that lives here are asfriendly as they come and the kids will be keen to give you a game of ping pong onthe weathered table in the middle of the jungle! You can enjoy a trek around thearea after the feeding or cross over the river to the Tanjung Harapan village. This isthe largest settlement in the area and you can walk through the tiny village seeingthe playful kids, small fish farms and local school. Island Hopping Indonesia : Group TourBali introductionPeople say that the Balinese people have reached self-content. They are proud ofhaving preserved their unique Hindu culture against the advance of Islam, thedominant religion throughout Indonesia. This is still reflected in day to day life andcan be seen in the numerous ceremonies, festivals and magnificent temples andpalaces. The Balinese are skilled artisans and are also noted for their traditionaldance, the distinctive music of the gamelan and for their skills in weaving cloth. Therise of tourism on Bali since artists began flocking here in the 60's has not changedlocal customs and still today it is the law in Bali that no building can be higher thana palm tree.Ubud introductionMany western artists and intellectuals began visiting Ubud in the 1930's and aided inthe expansion of the local Balinese arts and crafts. From this time Ubud becameknown in Bali, not for its beaches, but for art, music, architecture and dance. It islocated in the centre of the island, within 90 minutes of the popular south coastand a couple of hours from the quieter beaches of the north, east and west coasts. The central region of Bali is arguably the most scenic and Ubud is an ideally locatedtown from which to base yourself to explore all that Bali has to offer away fromthe coast. The slightly cooler temperatures in Ubud mean exploring the gallery lined streetsand markets is a little more comfortable than on the coast, however being locatedat a higher altitude you will see more rain here, particularly in the afternoons whentropical showers occur year round.Cremation ceremony near Ubud, BaliThursday18 October, 2012Tjampuhan Hotel, UbudA cultural tour of Ubud and the surrounding villagesgroup excursion with lunch in a local restaurantYour first stop on this full day trip is in Ubud itself where you will have theopportunity to browse through the galleries of prominent Balinese and Europeanartists at one of the town's excellent museums. It is unusual because it has nomusical accompaniment like many other Indonesian dances do, instead, a troupe ofover 50 men serve as the chorus, providing the music for the story in a series ofconstant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actors and making awondrous cacophony of synchronized "chak-achak-achak" clicking sounds whileswaying their bodies and waving their hands. From that chanting noise of "chakachak-achak",then it gave the dance its name Kecak. The dance lasts roughly an hour and after the dance, you will be taken for yourfarewell dinner.Saturday20 October, 2012Ubud to Denpasar airportgroup transferHead back to the airport in time for your flight - a journey of approximately 90minutes.Denpasar to Singapore Terminal: 3Singapore Airlines - Flight No: SQ947 - Dep: 20:05 - Arr: 22:35 - (61 days later);Class: Economy class; Non-stop flightSingapore Terminal: 3 to London Terminal: 3Singapore Airlines - Flight No: SQ222 - Dep: 23:30 - Arr: 05:55 - (next day); Class:Economy class; Non-stop flightSunday21 October, 2012Arrive back in to Heathrow at 05.55Itinerary in detail 27
