GUEST SPEAKERS Invited Keynote Speaker Dr Kathryn Schmitz Ph.D, MPH Dr Kathryn Schmitz, PhD, MPH has led nine exercise related studies, including a randomised controlled trial to assess the effects of twice weekly strength training among 86 recent breast cancer survivors (the Weight Training for Breast Cancer Survivors (WTBS) study, a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of twice weekly strength training to prevent age associated body fat gains among 164 premenopausal women aged 25-44, and an ongoing randomised controlled trial to assess the safety of upper body exercise among 288 breast cancer survivors with and without Lymphoedema (Physical Activity and Lymphoedema Trial (PAL). Her research extends from the role of physical activity in the prevention and etiology of obesity related cancers to the usefulness of activity for rehabilitation and health promotion in cancer survivors of all cancers. Her meta-analysis on the topic of exercise interventions in cancer patients and survivors provides a starting point for clinicians to understand the effects of exercise among cancer survivors. Dr. Schmitz’ long term professional goal is to see that all oncologists and cancer patients will eventually be as cognizant of the usefulness of exercise for cancer control as cardiologists already are for its role in controlling heart disease. Invited Speakers Gerry Gannon Gerry is an experienced conference MC having officiated at over 100 conferences, conventions, workshops and seminars in the past five years. Gerry’s background as a radio and television current affairs broadcaster lends itself to his proficiency as a panel facilitator/moderator. His research is thorough and meticulous, leading to a lively and informed handling of the issues. He quickly grasps concepts and leaves audiences feeling that they have been informed as well as entertained. Associate Professor Colleen Hayward B Ap. Sc, ACMD, B Ed, Colleen Hayward is a senior Noongar woman with family ties throughout the south-west of Western Australia and currently works as the Manager of the Kulunga Research Network at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Western Australia. She was previously deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA having started her working life as a teacher and maintaining ties to, and an interest in, Education and Training for more than 30 years. Associate Professor Hayward is the only Indigenous member of the State Training Board and brings to it an extensive policy and management background in a range of areas. In addition to membership on the State Training Board, Associate Professor Hayward’s expertise in the area of policy development and evaluation is indicated by her past and ongoing representation on a number of important bodies, which include: Deputy Chair of the inisterial Advisory on the Prevention of Deaths in Children and Young People, 2003-present. Chair, Advisory Group on Family and Domestic Violence Prevention and Early Intervention. Australian Council of Social Services Indigenous Policy Advisors Group, 2002-present. Invited Speakers Marc G Achen Ph.D Marc G. Achen, PhD is Associate Professor and Laboratory Head at the Melbourne Tumour Biology Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (located at Royal Melbourne Hospital). He received his Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of Melbourne, majoring in Biochemistry and Genetics, and carried out postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology (Martinsried, Germany) between 1991 and 1994. He joined the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in 1995. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that control growth of lymphatic vessels and blood vessels in tumours, lymphoedema and other pathologies. Ruth Coopee MOT Ruth Coopee received her Masters in Occupational Therapy in 1983 from Texas Woman’s University. Since graduation she has worked with patients across the lifespan from children in the school system to long-term care geriatrics. In a variety of settings from acute care hospital burn, neuro and orthopedic units, subacute rehab to skilled nursing facilities and HMO clinics. Specialising in Hand Therapy she developed a number of outpatient Hand Therapy programs and achieved Hand Therapy Certification in 1991. She has lectured on a national, international, local and college levvel addressing various topics involving rehabilitation of the Hand/Upper Extremity. Ruth works part time as a Hand Therapist in Boston for Harvard Vanguard Associates and Henry Heywood Rehabilitation Center in Gardner Massachusetts plus has a private practice in Worcester, Massachusetts. Ruth has considerable experience using Kinesio Taping: Certified Kinesio Taping Instructor. Awarded “Instructor of the Year” 2004 for her work in the area of Lymphoedema. Served as the Occupational Therapy consultant to the Kinesio Taping Association Involved in research using Kinesio Taping for Lymphoedema Guest speaker at the 15 th Annual Kinesio Taping International Symposium in 1999 Authored two Book chapters on the use of Kinesio Taping and currently writing two textbooks: - Basic and advanced Kinesio Taping for the Upper Extremity - Kinesio Taping for Lymphoedema and Venous Insufficiency Joel Gurr B. Sc (Podiatry), MBA Joel Gurr is acting Chief Podiatrist at Royal Perth Hospital. His experience spans 12 years as a podiatrist; 6 years in private practice followed by 6 years in the public sector at Royal Perth Hospital. He has specialised in the management of diabetic foot complications and Co-ordinates the Multi-disciplinary Foot Ulcer Clinic at Royal Perth Hospital - which combines the skills and knowledge of medical, allied health and nursing personnel to manage patients with complex diabetic foot ulceration and infection. Joel has recently started to publish and present nationally and internationally on the diabetic foot. Professor David Carey Professor David Carey has been involved in clinical research and treatment of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and osteoporosis since 1990. He has both national and international publications and presents at conferences world wide. Professor Carey graduated in both Science and Medicine at the UNSW and won the University Medal in Medicine. He moved to Brisbane in 1996 and was acting director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at PAH, prior to moving to the Wesley Hospital. He established the Brisbane Metabolic institute (BMI) at the end of 2006. He specialises in the treatment and management of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis and has an interest in R&D of drugs and programs to promote weight loss. He also provides teaching services, covering the topics of osteoporosis and obesity for the science and medical students at the University of Qld. Professor Carey runs an endocrine private practice, which has now been incorporated into the BMI and has a multidisciplinary approach to treating the metabolic syndrome, which runs inpatient and outpatient diabetes and obesity treatment programs. Current research includes clinical trials of oral growth hormone, Reductil, GLP-1 and cannabis receptors blockers (rimonabant) for treatment of obesity and diabetes. 04
