Marc G Achen Ph.D<br />

Marc G. Achen, PhD is Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

and Laboratory Head at <strong>the</strong> Melbourne Tumour<br />

Biology Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ludwig Institute for<br />

Cancer Research (located at Royal Melbourne<br />

Hospital). He received his Ph.D. in 1989 <strong>from</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Melbourne, majoring in<br />

Biochemistry and Genetics, and carried out postdoctoral work<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology (Martinsried,<br />

Germany) between 1991 and 1994. He joined <strong>the</strong> Ludwig<br />

Institute for Cancer Research in 1995. His research focuses<br />

on <strong>the</strong> molecular mechanisms that control growth <strong>of</strong> lymphatic<br />

vessels and blood vessels in tumours, lymphoedema and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r pathologies.<br />

Ruth Coopee MOT<br />

Ruth Coopee received her Masters in<br />

Occupational Therapy in 1983 <strong>from</strong> Texas<br />

Woman’s University. Since graduation she has<br />

worked with patients across <strong>the</strong> lifespan <strong>from</strong><br />

children in <strong>the</strong> school system to long-term care<br />

geriatrics. In a variety <strong>of</strong> settings <strong>from</strong> acute<br />

care hospital burn, neuro and orthopedic units, subacute rehab<br />

to skilled nursing facilities and HMO clinics.<br />

Specialising in Hand Therapy she developed a number <strong>of</strong><br />

outpatient Hand Therapy programs and achieved Hand<br />

Therapy Certification in 1991. She has lectured on a national,<br />

international, local and college levvel addressing various topics<br />

involving rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hand/Upper Extremity. Ruth<br />

works part time as a Hand Therapist in Boston for Harvard<br />

Vanguard Associates and Henry Heywood Rehabilitation<br />

Center in Gardner Massachusetts plus has a private practice in<br />

Worcester, Massachusetts.<br />

Ruth has considerable experience using Kinesio Taping:<br />

Certified Kinesio Taping Instructor. Awarded “Instructor <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Year” 2004 for her work in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> Lymphoedema.<br />

Served as <strong>the</strong> Occupational Therapy consultant to <strong>the</strong><br />

Kinesio Taping Association<br />

Involved in research using Kinesio Taping for Lymphoedema<br />

Guest speaker at <strong>the</strong> 15 th Annual Kinesio Taping<br />

International Symposium in 1999<br />

Authored two Book chapters on <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> Kinesio Taping<br />

and currently writing two textbooks:<br />

- Basic and advanced Kinesio Taping for <strong>the</strong> Upper Extremity<br />

- Kinesio Taping for Lymphoedema and Venous Insufficiency<br />

Joel Gurr B. Sc (Podiatry), MBA<br />

Joel Gurr is acting Chief Podiatrist at Royal<br />

Perth Hospital. His experience spans 12 years<br />

as a podiatrist; 6 years in private practice<br />

followed by 6 years in <strong>the</strong> public sector at Royal<br />

Perth Hospital. He has specialised in <strong>the</strong><br />

management <strong>of</strong> diabetic foot complications and<br />

Co-ordinates <strong>the</strong> Multi-disciplinary Foot Ulcer Clinic at Royal<br />

Perth Hospital - which combines <strong>the</strong> skills and knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

medical, allied health and nursing personnel to manage<br />

patients with complex diabetic foot ulceration and infection.<br />

Joel has recently started to publish and present nationally and<br />

internationally on <strong>the</strong> diabetic foot.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David Carey<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David Carey has been involved in<br />

clinical research and treatment <strong>of</strong> obesity,<br />

insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and<br />

osteoporosis since 1990. He has both national<br />

and international publications and presents at<br />

conferences world wide.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Carey graduated in both Science and Medicine at <strong>the</strong><br />

UNSW and won <strong>the</strong> University Medal in Medicine. He moved to<br />

Brisbane in 1996 and was acting director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Diabetes and Endocrinology at PAH, prior to moving to <strong>the</strong><br />

Wesley Hospital. He established <strong>the</strong> Brisbane Metabolic institute<br />

(BMI) at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 2006. He specialises in <strong>the</strong> treatment and<br />

management <strong>of</strong> metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and<br />

osteoporosis and has an interest in R&D <strong>of</strong> drugs and programs<br />

to promote weight loss. He also provides teaching services,<br />

covering <strong>the</strong> topics <strong>of</strong> osteoporosis and obesity for <strong>the</strong> science<br />

and medical students at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Qld.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Carey runs an endocrine private practice, which has<br />

now been incorporated into <strong>the</strong> BMI and has a multidisciplinary<br />

approach to treating <strong>the</strong> metabolic syndrome,<br />

which runs inpatient and outpatient diabetes and obesity<br />

treatment programs.<br />

Current research includes clinical trials <strong>of</strong> oral growth hormone,<br />

Reductil, GLP-1 and cannabis receptors blockers (rimonabant)<br />

for treatment <strong>of</strong> obesity and diabetes.<br />
