Update!...
Wrexham Industrial Estate Access Road
Work is still ahead of schedule and on budget
for the new industrial estate access road which
will be open soon. The latest:
• a great deal of progress has been made on the
northern access road, and a number of recent
changes in traffic layout have allowed further works
in critical areas to go ahead.
• The southern access road is ahead of programme
and expected to be open to traffic slightly ahead
of the northern section.
• The Welsh government (who financed the works)
and Wrexham Council are already planning the
opening ceremony in mid-July - a month ahead
of schedule.
Wrexham Council and the construction team, Birse
Civils Ltd, fully understand that the works have led
to delays and disruption over the last year and would
like to thank all those affected for their cooperation
and patience.
Over the last decade the county borough has saved
over 200,000 tonnes of recyclable material from
landfill – and so it’s a big thank you to you our
residents who have helped us achieve this. Back
in 2001 we had one of the lowest recycling rates
in Wales at 3%, but now it’s almost 50% in 2011.
This is what we did to change:
2002 6000 households in Wrexham issued with pink
and green bags for cans, plastic bottles and paper,
and a green wheeled bin for garden waste
2003 ‘dealing with our rubbish’ consultation
undertaken resulting in the switch to a green box
for cans, plastic bottles and glass
2007 The council enters into a 25 year contract with
Waste recycling group ltd to ensure that the 40%
statutory recycling and composting targets are met
2008 all Wrexham households join the ‘recycle with
michael’ scheme
birthday
Michael!!!!
2009 recycling park built
and composting unit opened.
food waste and corrugated
cardboard can now also be
recycled and households are
issued with a kitchen caddy.
Blue bags are also issued to
collect cardboard packaging
with the paper.
2012 a third of Wrexham
residents have the benefit of
weekly kerbside food waste collections
our next target is to reach 52% recycling by march
next year, and 70% recycling by march 2025.
It’s more important than ever that everyone pulls
together over the next decade and beyond to ensure
the Recycle with Michael Scheme remains a success
with residents continuing to recycle and aiming
towards reaching zero waste to landfill.
Dr. Helen Paterson, has been in
post for 10 months now and hasn’t
wasted any time in getting to grips
with its services and what you,
our customers, think of them.
here, Connect follows helen as she
gets out into the local community.
Back in January, helen met
council house tenant sylvia
Williams. mrs Williams’ kitchen
had recently been replaced by
one of the council’s multiskilled
joiners, krzysztof Talkowski.
krzysztof installed the kitchen
to the specifications required,
but also installed a shelf for mrs
Williams’ microwave using some
scrap metal. after meeting mrs
Williams and krystof, helen said:
‘it was clear to see that krzysztof
took great pride in his work, and
really enjoys working for Wrexham
Council. The fact that he installed
an extra feature in the kitchen
using his own initiative speaks
volumes about his character.
‘mrs Williams was delighted
with krzysztof’s work and it
was great to see, first hand,
excellent service being provided
by Wrexham Council.’
Helen meets Mrs williams
to find out what she thought
of the council ’ s service
Helen and krzysztof look over the
plans for Mrs. williams ’ kitchen
after leaving mrs Williams’
home, helen went on to visit the
Broughton estate office, where
manager russell Jones spoke of
the important role estate offices
still have to play in the community.
russell said: ‘many people just see
us as a place to pay bills, but we
provide much more than that. We
see ourselves as a ‘one stop shop’
for the estates we manage - dealing
with repairs, working with numerous
agencies to improve the area and
supporting our residents in dealing
with disputes, antisocial behaviour
and all other housing related issues.
staff here are always willing to
talk and, more importantly, listen
to residents’ needs and concerns
and that makes a real difference.’
helen has also been visiting staff at
Contact Wrexham on lord street.
By listening to phone calls received
at the call centre, she has been able
to gain an insight into what kind of
enquires are made by Wrexham
residents and how the council are
equipped to deal with them.
louise davies from Contact
Wrexham said: ‘it was lovely to meet
helen and show her exactly what
we do here in the call centre. There
are hundreds of calls to the council’s
298989 phone number everyday
and it was a good opportunity
for her to see the wide range of
enquiries that we deal with.’
during a morning spent with the
town centre manager, helen met
staff in the town’s shops and stall
Helen sits alongside louise
Davies and listens to calls
from residents
holders in both the Butcher’s and
People’s markets. nigel Jones
from the Butcher’s market spoke
to helen about the importance of
markets in our town’s history and
to the retail offering and shopping
opportunities that Wrexham
offers its residents and visitors.
helen says: ‘it is really good
to meet our customers. it is
important to know what the
people of Wrexham are happy
and, indeed, unhappy about.
‘There is no substitute for getting
out and about and finding out what
people’s experiences of the council
have been. it is the best way to
stay in tune with our residents and
show them that we are not just a
faceless organisation, but a team
of contactable people working
with residents to make Wrexham
an even better place to live.’
helen will continue to make
visits all over the county as
‘part of the day job’ she says.
Beat the loan sharks >bite back!
6
If you’re finding it hard to make ends meet, whatever
the reason, residents are being urged not to make
the mistake of turning to illegal lenders (loan
sharks). Read on to find out how to spot them
and the shocking facts behind how they work.
Wales’ independent money laundering unit (imlu)
was set up by central government at the end of
2007 and Wrexham Council’s Trading standards
service works alongside them to search out and
prosecute loan sharks in the county borough.
loan sharks rip off borrowers by charging extortionate
interest rates (150,000% aPr is not unheard of!)
and adding on penalty payments as and when they
want. ‘sharks don’t give you paperwork explaining
the terms of the loan, and you have to keep paying
them back until they decide you can stop. They
may appear friendly when they offer the loan and
when you pay - it’s when you can’t pay that you see
the other side of them’, the imlu team explains.
it can get worse than just being ripped off. loan
sharks use threats and sometimes violence
A new school
for Wrexham
Last year, Wrexham Council was awarded
£4.1 million by the Welsh Government towards
the cost of building a Welsh medium primary school
in Gwersyllt.
since then, Wrexham Council has been working to
get everything in place for the project to begin. as
Connect went to press, the quotes from potential
contractors were being considered.
it is hoped that building work on the project will
begin this summer, subject to final planning approval.
Works should then take 12 months, allowing the
school to open for the new term in september 2013.
Olympic torch
On 30 May, Wrexham became one of 1,019
communities to be given the once in a lifetime
opportunity of seeing the Olympic flame as it toured
the UK prior to its arrival at the Olympic Stadium.
When it reaches the end of its tour at middlesex
university on 27 July, the flame will have travelled over
8,000 miles having started its journey in land’s end
on 19 may.
The torch proved to be
a wonderful sight as it was
taken over the Pontcysyllte
aqueduct both on foot
and by barge after the
aqueduct was named
as one of the flame’s
alternative modes of
transport.
Olympic standard
New legislation means Wrexham Council’s public
complaints of blockages or defects to private sewers
a recent change in the law means responsibility
the footpath and road to the main sewer) has moved
to dwr ^ Cymru Welsh Water. Previously it lay with the
ourC0 2
Here at wrexham Council we believe in doing
our bit for the environment and the latest additions
to our fleet of vehicles are helping us to do just
that – and they’ll help us to save money as well!
we’ve invested in two electric cars to help drive down
our carbon emissions and business travel costs.
The two nissan Leaf models are pollution free at
the point of use and they’re extremely economical
for day to day duties within the county borough.
The cars have been part funded by the Government’s
UK Plug In Car Grant Scheme and are being used
by staff who were previously using their own
vehicles to carry out their day to day job.
As well as the environmental benefits, the cars will
help Wrexham Council make some valuable financial
savings. They work out at around 93% cheaper
than paying staff the appropriate mileage allowance
to use their own vehicles for work purposes.
The cars will generate savings of almost £10,000 a year,
which means they’ll pay for themselves in two years and
then help the council to continue to save money thereafter..
Phil Walton, who is leading the council’s carbon reduction
programme, said: “The introduction of these cars is part of
our efforts to reduce the impact we have on the environment.
“Business travel contributes to the council’s carbon
footprint and these cars will help us to reduce that.
They will also save money on staff business travel costs
and that helps us to make best use of our resources
and give the public the best value that we can.”
The cars are driven by an electric motor which generates
80kw and is powered by a lithium-ion battery. The vehicles
can also be charged by an electric socket. You may have
already seen them on the county’s roads but you definitely
won’t have heard them because they don’t make any noise!
The council has already found the two cars to be great value
for money and are currently in the process of buying a third
vehicle and we hope to add more to our fleet in the future.
• wrexham Council has already reduced its
carbon footprint by 10% and saved in excess
of £3m in increased energy costs through
a variety of energy saving initiatives.
Powering our way
To a brigHTer fuTure
we’ve recently completed the biggest solar
project in the uK fitting Pv panels to around
3,000 of our social housing stock.
it’s part of our ambitious plan to reduce the
authority’s carbon footprint by 50% by 2016. in
addition, it will generate an income for the council
that can be re-invested in other services
Phil walton, Strategic Director said:
“The solar project is one of our major initiatives
to reduce the council’s carbon footprint. It is expected
to save up to 3,000 tonnes of C0 2
each year, which
is the equivalent to planting a forest of 3,000 trees.”
The project was completed in just seven months and has
received national publicity. As well as helping the council to
reduce its carbon emissions, the PV panels will generate a
significant income thanks to a Government incentive scheme
which pays a tariff for renewable energy and, any surplus
electricity that isn’t used, can be sold back to the National Grid.
The local economy has also received a boost with Wrexhambased
manufacturer, Sharp Solar, providing more than
25,000 panels and 63 local people being employed to work
as installers, tenant liaison offcers, electricians and labourers
since the project began. Council tradesmen have also been
trained and many now possess the MCS accreditation, allowing
them to undertake ongoing maintenance of the equipment.
you can find out more about how you can
reduce your energy consumption and carbon
emissions by contacting the energy Saving Trust
for free on 0800 512 012 or visiting their website
