Request for Proposal (RFP)<br />

A. Requirements<br />

Proposal due/electronic submission: Friday, March 15, <strong>2013</strong> (by 5:00 p.m.)<br />

Decision and earliest possible start: Wednesday, May 1, <strong>2013</strong><br />

B. Purpose<br />

Applicants are <strong>in</strong>vited to apply for tra<strong>in</strong>ee research development funds for translational<br />

research projects related to breast cancer research. The development of the proposal<br />

should lead to additional breast cancer research or possible <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong> a large multiproject<br />

grant proposal such as a SPORE application for NCI fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

C. Eligibility<br />

Eligible Candidates:<br />

Funds from this program may be used to support post-doctoral or cl<strong>in</strong>ical fellows (who<br />

will be <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>in</strong>vestigators with<strong>in</strong> the next few years), junior faculty, or established<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigators who wish to develop or refocus their careers on translational research.<br />

Investigators supported by NCI career development awards (K series) may also be<br />

eligible for support through this program as allowable.<br />

Each junior level candidate (post-docs, cl<strong>in</strong>ical fellows, and assistant professors)<br />

should have a mentor(s) and devote a significant percentage of his/her effort to<br />

translational research.<br />

Eligible Mentors<br />

An ideal mentor would be a Siteman <strong>Cancer</strong> Center Member or Affiliate Member at the<br />

Assistant Professor level or higher, have strong and active records of conduct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

research studies and/or studies of breast cancer diseases, as well as strong leadership<br />

capabilities and substantial mentorship experiences. Applications will not be considered<br />

without a Letter of Support from their mentor. If you are from an external but<br />

collaborative <strong>in</strong>stitution or <strong>in</strong> need of assistance <strong>in</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g a mentor please contact<br />

Kyle Neeley (contact <strong>in</strong>formation below) as early as possible.<br />

Amount: One <strong>Career</strong> <strong>Award</strong> will be awarded up to $50,000 for one year.<br />

4. <strong>Research</strong> Plan (5 pages maximum) for A-E<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g head<strong>in</strong>gs should be used for the research plan.<br />

A. Specific Aims (1/2 page maximum): State concisely the hypothesis to be tested<br />

and the specific aim(s) to be achieved dur<strong>in</strong>g the grant period. The aims must be<br />

reasonable to achieve dur<strong>in</strong>g the one-year period of the award.<br />

B. Significance to <strong>Breast</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> (1/2-1 page maximum): State the<br />

relevance of the proposed project to basic, cl<strong>in</strong>ical, or prevention and control<br />

breast cancer research. Please specify if the project is translational or will lead to<br />

translational research opportunities. Discuss any potential utilization of the<br />

Siteman Core facilities.<br />

C. Background and Prelim<strong>in</strong>ary Investigations (1-1.5 pages maximum): Discuss<br />

the pert<strong>in</strong>ent research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs that have been described <strong>in</strong> the scientific literature<br />

and how this proposal will add to these results. Also discuss any prelim<strong>in</strong>ary data<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed that are relevant to this proposal.<br />

D. Experimental Design and Methods (1-1.5 pages maximum): Concisely present<br />

the experimental design and the methods to be used to accomplish the specific<br />

aims. Also <strong>in</strong>dicate how the results will be <strong>in</strong>terpreted and how they will lead to<br />

future <strong>in</strong>vestigations. Well-known methods and standard procedures may be<br />

described very briefly or referenced, but novel experimental approaches should<br />

be outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> more detail.<br />

E. Plans for Subsequent External Fund<strong>in</strong>g (1/2 page maximum): Describe plans<br />

for future, collaborative applications based on the proposed work.<br />

8. Additional Information Page<br />

Human <strong>Research</strong> Studies: All new cancer-related research <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g human subjects,<br />

and thus need<strong>in</strong>g approval by the Human <strong>Research</strong> Protection Office (HRPO), must first<br />

be reviewed and approved by the Siteman <strong>Cancer</strong> Center Protocol Review and<br />

Monitor<strong>in</strong>g Committee (PRMC). Funds will not be released prior to PRMC and HRPO<br />

approval. Please <strong>in</strong>clude a page expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g your project’s human participation, or the<br />

anticipated date you will be submitt<strong>in</strong>g to the PRMC/HRPO, and when approval is<br />

expected.<br />

E. Review Process<br />

All applications will be evaluated by two anonymous scientific reviewers as well as a<br />

patient advocate and scored accord<strong>in</strong>g to scientific merit and accordance with the RFA.<br />

Terms of the <strong>Award</strong>:<br />

• Funds are for one year. It is expected that the Grantee will completely utilize the<br />

full amount of fund<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the one-year term of the award. No-cost extensions<br />

of one year may be granted with the approval of the <strong>Breast</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong><br />

Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee. All unspent funds at the end of the grant period (with nocost<br />

extensions as applicable) will be returned.<br />

• All awards must have appropriate <strong>in</strong>stitutional regulatory approvals (SCC<br />

Protocol Review and Monitor<strong>in</strong>g Committee, Human <strong>Research</strong> Protection Office,<br />

Animal Studies, Radiation Safety) before funds will be transferred.<br />

• An annual progress report will be required no later than 60 days follow<strong>in</strong>g the end<br />

of the fund<strong>in</strong>g period and for the follow<strong>in</strong>g 3-5 years to capture any subsequent<br />

grants or publications.<br />

• Indirect costs will not be awarded.<br />
