Lisa Steinkamp, PT, MS, MBA, PT Program Director,
established MEDiC’s Physical Therapy clinic in 2003
and created the relationship between MEDiC and PT
students. PT services are in high demand for many
homeless patients who spend significant time
walking and carrying their belongings.
Prior to my first MEDiC experience, I really did not know what to expect and how I
would be able to transfer what I had learned so far in the physical therapy curriculum to
actual patients. I was somewhat confused about how I would be able to help patients
who did not require physical therapy services. After my MEDiC experience I realized
that even though a patient may not present with a physical therapy impairment, there
were still many learning experiences that I appreciated. One valuable skill I improved
upon was conducting a patient history evaluation.
MEDiC not only provides the opportunity for interaction between different health
professional students, but a chance to learn from each other. MEDiC provides an
opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in their courses and help the
many people who are uninsured or underinsured.
