MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION
Thermoplastic Materials
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type 4, Grade 1
Ashahi/America uses an unplasticized PVC polymer in all of its PVC valves. This material has excellent chemical resistance,
strength, rigidity, and modulus of elasticity. It resists attack by most acids and strong alkalies, as well as gasoline, kerosene,
aliphatic alcohols and hydrocarbons, and salt solutions. Aromatic, chlorinated organic compounds, and lacquer solvents do effect
PVC’s chemical properties. PVC’s low cost and overall balance of properties make the material best suited to the widest number
of corrosive applications. It’s temperature limit is 140 F.
CPVC(Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) Type 4, Grade 1
The properties of CPVC and its advantages are very similar to those of PVC; however , its working temperature range is higher
(200 F) than that of PVC. It should be specified in some instances where hot corrosive liquids are being handled and an extra
margin of safety is required.
PP(polypropylene) Type1
Polypropylene, a member of the polyolefin family, is one of the lightest plastics known. It is highly crystalline, thus it is strong
and hard. It possesses excellent chemical resistance to many acids, alkalies and organic solvents. PP is not recommended for
use with chlorinated hydrocarbons and aromatics. It’s upper temperature limit is 180 F.
PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride)
PVDF is a high molecular weight fluorocarbon with superior abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, dielectric properties, and
mechanical strength. It maintains these characteristics over a temperature range of -40 F to 250 F. PVDF is highly resistant to
wet or dry chlorine, bromine and other halogens, most strong acids and bases, aliphatics, alcohols, and chlorinated solvents. It
is not recommended for ketones or esters.
Teflon (TFE Flourocarbons)
This Fluorocarbon is almost insoluble and chemically inert. Teflon in application on bearing surfaces exhibits a natural lubricity
that makes lubrication completely unnecessary. It has a very high thermal stability, is nonflammable, and exhibits a very low dielectric
constant. It’s maximum temperature limit is 250 F.
Elastomeric Materials
Viton
Viton is a fluoroelastomer which is used as a seating and sealing material in many Asahi/America valves. It resists a wide range
of chemicals, including mineral acids, salts, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It’s maximum temperature limit is 250F.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Terpolymer)
This elastomer is particularly suited for butterfly valve liners and “O” ring seals. It can stand up to a variety of acids, bases,
alcohols, and oxidizing chemicals. It’s maximum temperature limit is 212F
Nitrile (Buna-N)
Nitrile rubber is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. In addition to its good elastomeric properties, it is resistant to aliphatic
hydrocarbons and aromatic solvents. It’s maximum temperature limit is 212 F.
