KEY
ATLANTO-AXIAL INSTABILITY-AAI
AAI is a condition, often present in those with Down
Syndrome, that allows increased mobility of two vertebrae
near the top of the spinal column. NSSRA requires AAI
documentation from a physician for a participant with
Down Syndrome wishing to register in a program where
this symbol is indicated. AAI requires precautions that
may aect the safety of those with Down Syndrome
participating in certain programs.
COOPERATIVE PROGRAM
A program with this symbol is a cooperative program
oered through an agreement between NSSRA and partner
agencies or other organizations/agencies. NSSRA provides
sta, equipment and support.
TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
Program descriptions indicate if pick up and drop o points
or door-to-door transportation is available. “Afterschool
Transportation Provided” means participants will be
transported from school to programs. Please indicate your
pick up/drop o locations on the registration form.
BRING SPENDING MONEY
The programs with these symbols may require participants
to carry and spend money for food, beverages and
souvenirs.
UNDETERMINED DROP OFF TIME
NSSRA may oer programs to destinations such as sporting
events and shows for which the end time is not specically
determinable. The group will stay until the conclusion of
the event. Sta will phone each participant’s household at
the conclusion of the event with specic drop o times.
IMPORTANT REGISTRATION
INFORMATION
NSSRA programs have become so popular that many
reach their maximum capacity quickly and therefore
waiting lists must be started. To be fair to all registrants,
procedures have been established as follows:
REGISTRATION,
TRANSPORTATION FEES AND
DEADLINE
Each program and event listed in our brochure is
assigned one code and one fee. If the program oers
transportation, a separate code and fee will be listed. On
the registration form (pages 49-50), registrants should
ll in the program name, code and fee. If transportation
is required, registrants should also complete the
transportation locations/codes and fee.
LOTTERY SYSTEM
A lottery system will be conducted on the Friday following
the registration deadline, if a minimum of four people are
on a waiting list. The lottery procedure remains the same
as in the past seasons and is explained in its entirety on
page 48.
IT’S EASY TO REGISTER...
1. Just complete the Registration Form.
2. Be sure to SIGN THE WAIVER on the registration
form.
3. Include a minimum of a 15% deposit.
4. FAX, MAIL, or DROP OFF the form and payment
to the NSSRA oce.
5. REGISTER EARLY! Programs ll up quickly!
6. Remember, you are required to complete
an Annual Information Form (AIF). This AIF
must be completed and led with the NSSRA
oce, prior to the start of programs, in order
for a participant to join any NSSRA program or
event. The AIF contains important participant
information which is necessary for NSSRA sta
to plan and execute safe and enjoyable
programs.
LENGTH OF PROGRAMS
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday programs run 7 weeks.
Monday, Friday and Saturday programs run 8 weeks.
MIN/MAX INFORMATION
Program Min/Max numbers reect the minimum number
of participants required to run a program and the
maximum number of participants allowed to register
for a program. Some programs may be oered in more
than one section of the Program Guide according to the
designated age group.
PRIMARY MAILING ADDRESS
USED FOR NSSRA MAILING
LISTS
When a participant’s parents or guardians
have multiple mailing addresses, all of our
correspondence will be sent to the address listed
on the program registration form. If another parent
or guardian, living at a dierent address, would like
to receive information from NSSRA, the person who
signed the registration form must submit a request
in writing to the Superintendent of Recreation.
Program and participant information will also be
communicated to the individual that signed the
registration form. Sometimes the person who
signed the registration form and the person that
paid the program fees are dierent. Nevertheless,
the person that signed the registration form would
be our primary contact.
GATOR ATHLETIC
INFORMATION
NSSRA oers competitive sports
opportunities for individual sports and
team sports. Our competitive sports
programs are called “Gator Athletics.” Participants
in Gator Athletics compete in tournaments against
other Special Recreation Associations and in Special
Olympics competitions. Gator Athletics run on a
dierent schedule than NSSRA Traditional Programs
to meet deadlines established by Special Olympics
Illinois.
It is important for athletes to attend and participate
in all practices and games as well as tournaments.
Athletes attending any tournament with NSSRA are
required to register for this additional program with
no added cost. Registration materials will be sent
home during the program and must be turned in by
the deadline printed on the registration form. This
registration is a commitment that the athlete will
INCLUSION
Your local Park District or Recreation Department is ready, willing and able to include you in all their
recreation fun!
The Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) recognizes that some individuals with disabilities
would benet from social opportunities available by participating in programs oered through their local Park
District or Recreation Department. This joint eort provides inclusion support in the form of extra sta, sign
language interpreters, adapted rules, behavior management training, disability awareness training, and/or any
other services necessary to include your child.
Inclusion opportunities are available to people with disabilities in the NSSRA partner agency’s recreation
programs. Program dates vary depending on the individual partner agency.
INCLUSION provides opportunities for people with and without disabilities to experience recreation together.
INCLUSION looks at the needs, interests and abilities of people instead of focusing on their disabilities.
INCLUSION supports the process of preparing, learning, experiencing and growing with each person, each family
and each recreation sta.
INCLUSION provides recreational choice.
HERE’S HOW TO GET INCLUDED!
1. Register for the Park District or Recreation Department program of your choice.
2. Mark the appropriate “Special Accommodations” section of the registration form.
3. NSSRA’s Manager of Inclusion will be contacted by your Park District or Recreation Department to discuss
the type of inclusion support needed to accommodate you or your family member.
4. You and your family member start the program with the inclusion support(s) in place.
5. The NSSRA Inclusion Team periodically observes the program to provide support and answer questions.
6. Communication between the NSSRA Inclusion Team, recreation sta, the individual and/or family is
continued throughout the inclusion process.
FOR MORE INFORMATION
TRANSPORTATION
INFORMATION
Program write–ups will indicate if
pick up and drop o points or door–
to–door transportation is available.
The term “Afterschool Transportation
Provided” means participants are
transported from school to programs.
If transportation (with pick up and
drop o points) is provided for the
programs, please list your choice of
pick up AND drop o locations on the
registration form where indicated,
using codes on page 51.
If you register for transportation,
please ca NSSRA if participant is not
going to need transportation pick up
and/or drop o on particular day(s),
otherwise routes are unnecessarily
delayed.
PROGRAM DROP OFF & PICK UP
For the safety of all participants,
parents must personally check in with
a program leader when dropping
o and picking up their child. Sta
cannot leave a program or other
participants to escort an individual to
or from a vehicle. Therefore, parents
are asked to park and check in with
the program leader during both drop
o and pick up for all programs.
LATE PICK UP
Drivers will wait a maximum of ten
minutes from scheduled time. After
the ten minute wait period, the driver
will continue on the route to the next
location. Participants/families who
do not arrive on time may be asked
to meet at an alternate location for
pick up. After ten minutes a fee will
be applied, Refer to the Late Pick Up
Policy on page 5.
DOOR-TO-DOOR ROUTES
Door–to–door routes are planned
according to the number of
participants registered and their
locations, as well as the nal
destination. With limited vehicles
available, it may be necessary for
participants to ride in the van for
one hour or more. Participants will
be picked up and dropped o in
geographical order. If this schedule
is inconvenient, please call NSSRA
and ask to speak to the Manager of
Operations. We will do our best to
accommodate you!
TRANSPORTATION SAFETY
PROCEDURES
NSSRA has implemented these
transportation procedures to ensure
participants ride safely in our vehicles.
1. All passengers must be sitting in
seats or wheelchairs with safety
belts securely fastened. The driver
will not proceed until all seat belts
are fastened.
2. All wheelchairs must have brakes
that are in good working order and
must be able to stop the chair from
moving.
3. The NSSRA sta will assist
participants to and from their
homes, but driveways and
walkways must be clear of debris
and obstacles. Sta will not enter
homes.
4. NSSRA sta is responsible for
determining whether or not a
participant can be transported
safely. If it is determined that it
would be dangerous to transport an
individual, the driver may refuse to
transport that person.
5. Persons riding in Amigo–type
wheelchairs must transfer into a van
seat and must use a seat belt.
6. Persons unable to be in a house
alone should have someone meet
the van at the designated time
of return. NSSRA cannot wait
more than ten minutes due to the
demanding van schedule.
NSSRA reserves the right to refuse to
transport individuals. Please recognize
that these policies have been developed
to ensure the safety of everyone riding
in NSSRA vehicles. Your cooperation is
greatly appreciated.
A minimum of three participants is
needed at each pick up/drop o site.
Late registrants may not have
transportation during the rst week
of programs due to routing changes.
Participants are notied if a problem
occurs. When necessary, NSSRA may use
SEPTRAN, 303 Taxi, or other contract
carriers. Door–to–door transportation is
for residents only.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
If inclement weather occurs, NSSRA may
still decide to hold programs. If the weather
turns dangerous, (100 degrees or higher
temperature or heat index) NSSRA will call
participants prior to the start of a program
to cancel the program. If you are not
sure whether a program will meet due to
inclement weather, call NSSRA. Refunds are
issued for cancelled programs.
AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
NSSRA complies with the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA) and will make
reasonable accommodations to enable
individuals with disabilities to participate in
and enjoy recreation programs. If you have
a question about NSSRA’s compliance, or
feel that NSSRA has discriminated against
you, please call Craig Culp, Executive
Director at NSSRA.
SPECIAL ASSISTANCE/INTERPRETER
If you need special assistance or a sign
language interpreter, please inform NSSRA
upon registration (voice or relay).
SAFETY/INSURANCE INFORMATION
NSSRA is committed to conducting its
recreation programs and activities in
the safest manner possible and holds
the safety of participants in the highest
possible regard. Participants and parents
registering for recreation programs must
recognize, however, that there is an
inherent risk of injury when choosing to
participate in recreation activities. NSSRA
continually strives to reduce such risks and
insists that participants follow all safety
rules and instructions which have been
designed to protect the participant’s safety.
Please recognize that NSSRA does not carry
medical accident insurance for injuries
sustained in its programs. The cost of such
would make program fees prohibitive.
Therefore, each person registering
themselves or a family member for a
recreation program/activity should review
their own insurance coverage. It must
be noted that the absence of health
insurance coverage does not make NSSRA
automatically responsible for the payment
of medical expenses.
Due to the diculty and exorbitant cost of
obtaining liability insurance, the agency
providing liability coverage for NSSRA
requires the execution of a Waiver and
Release. Your cooperation in completing
and signing the registration form is greatly
appreciated.
MEDICATION
At times participants may require assistance
taking medication during programs. If the
participant is unable to self–medicate or take
the medication prior to or after the program,
NSSRA requires additional paperwork and
pre–packaged medication be delivered
to our oce prior to the program. Please
contact Safety Coordinator Katie Koske at
(847) 509-9400 x6825 or kkoske@nssra.org
with any questions.
be held until we can determine if
accommodations for your participation
can be made. These accommodations
include transportation capacity, sta
assignments and space limits at particular
events. Please be assured that we will
do our best to t you in or nd another
suitable program. The best way to ensure
participation in a program(s) is to:
REGISTER BY
AUGUST 24, 2012
REFUND
A refund of the program fee minus 10%
will be made only up to the second
session of a program. There will be no
refunds for cancellation after the start of
the second session. Refunds, minus 10%
and NSSRA prepaid costs (tickets, sta
costs, etc.), are given for one time events
and social clubs when participants give
NSSRA at least one week advance notice.
When canceling for a medical reason,
refunds are minus NSSRA prepaid costs
and NSSRA would require a note from
your doctor. To receive a full refund of
trip cost, you must cancel at least 90 days
before departure date; a detailed trip
cancellation policy will be mailed with
your registration conrmation.
RESIDENT/NON-RESIDENT POLICY
If you live in one of NSSRA’s ten partner
park districts or two cities and one
village, you are considered a resident.
These include the Park Districts of
Deereld, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland
Park, Kenilworth, Lake Blu, Northbrook,
Northeld, Wilmette and Winnetka, the
Cities of Lake Forest and Highwood, and
the Village of Riverwoods.
Individuals residing outside the NSSRA
boundaries (in an area that does not
support NSSRA through tax dollars) must
pay an annual Administrative Fee prior
to registering for any NSSRA program.
The Administrative Fee is determined
annually. The Administrative Fee is
approximately $2,200. This fee allows
participation in NSSRA programs through
DECEMBER 31, 2012.
LOTTERY*
The lottery system was devised to
provide all residents with an equal
opportunity to enroll in our programs.
If a program is full and the waiting list
has a minimum of four names, a lottery
will be conducted for all residents who
register by the deadline. The lottery
will be conducted one week following
the registration deadline. Participants
who are lotteried out will be placed
on a waiting list pending stang and
transportation. Non–resident registrants
and any registration received after the
deadline will be processed on a daily
basis, rst priority given to residents.
*Due to the varied registration deadlines,
the lottery system will not be used for
special events. Registrations will be
processed in the order that they are
received.
FINANCIAL AID
Participants in need of nancial
assistance may request a Reduced Fee
Application by contacting the NSSRA
Registrar. Send in your registration
form with the application and enclose
a 15% deposit to reserve a place in the
program. All requests are reviewed
by the Executive Director and you are
notied of the decision in writing. Your
deposit will be deducted from any
balance due. Payment plans are also
available. Financial assistance is not
awarded to non-resident participants,
for cooperative programs, special
events, trips or transportation.
WHO IS NSSRF?
Northern Suburban Special Recreation Foundation (NSSRF) was established to support
the mission of NSSRA by raising and granting supplemental funding. NSSRF raises funds
throughout the year with all proceeds beneting the Association. NSSRF, in conjunction
with NSSRA, hosts the annual SWING Golf Outing and Strikes for NSSRA bowl-a-thon for
all donors, supporters and families. NSSRF also raises funds through solicitation of grants
and the holiday appeal letter. Throughout the year, NSSRF receives generous support from
many individuals, corporations, foundations, businesses and community organizations.
Our Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-prot organization. Donations to NSSRF are tax
deductible to the extent allowed by law.
“Without NSSRA, the life-long friendships that have
developed, the life and social skills that have been
learned and the joyous celebrations of success would
not have been experienced by my son, other NSSRA
participants and their families. The support that
NSSRF gives to NSSRA ensures that every individual
with a special need in our communities will be able
to participate and benet from NSSRA’s outstanding
programs.”
Rick La Chapelle
Parent of a NSSRA Participant and President of NSSRF
Created in 1997, the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Foundation (NSSRF)
supports NSSRA by:
• Providing financial assistance for participants and their families
who are in need.
• Granting the funds to purchase specially equipped vehicles to
transport participants to programs.
• Sponsoring several special events allowing the participants and
their families to attend for free or at a reduced rate.
• Providing ongoing support for the growing demand for new
services and programs oered by NSSRA.

Volunteer Your Time
We would love your help on the Strikes for NSSRA
bowl-a-thon or SWING Golf Outing Committees. Or,
volunteer at NSSRA programs and special events to provide
the best community access for people with disabilities. We
welcome your time and talent in any capacity.
Make a Donation
Your personal nancial or in-kind contribution to the
foundation makes an incredible impact. Many children,
teens and adults would miss out on a healthy leisure lifestyle
without transportation services and nancial assistance. As
a 501(c)3 not-for-prot, NSSRF is also eligible for matching
donations from your company.
Attend or Sponsor an Event
You are invited to come out and play with us! Golf with your
foursome at the SWING Golf Outing; see the best in visual
and performing arts at the Cultural Arts Showcase; enjoy
dinner at the Shining Stars Recognition Banquet; Bowl at
Strikes for NSSRA; celebrate summer at the annual Summer
Bash and more! Together we make a dierence in many
lives.
There are many ways to make an impact. Please let us know
if you would like to help us meet our mission. Contact Susie
