Montreal WHO/PAHO Collaborating <strong>C<strong>en</strong>tre</strong> for research and training in m<strong>en</strong>tal health<br />

Annual Report - <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>2010</strong><br />

request of the Division of M<strong>en</strong>tal Health in G<strong>en</strong>eva, our <strong>CC</strong> has formalized its<br />

expertise in this field.<br />

Our int<strong>en</strong>tion is to integrate, for countries we will collaborate with, epidemiological data,<br />

organizational data, and assessm<strong>en</strong>ts of health services, to build a m<strong>en</strong>tal health policy that<br />

is relevant. Dr. Laporta is responsible for developing this line of expertise.<br />

Our work in this area during this period, is described below (WHO>AMRO>OPS>section (5))<br />

Disasters and Emerg<strong>en</strong>cies<br />

(1) Following the tsunami in Aceh in Indonesia, our <strong>CC</strong> was called upon for training with the<br />

primary healthcare authorities in Jakarta and Aceh. Since that mission, we have be<strong>en</strong><br />

developing our expertise in this field.<br />

(2) Most of our work in this period took place in the Caribbean (See WHO> AMRO> OPS><br />

items (6) and (7)).<br />

WHO Regional Offices<br />

Regional Office for the Americas: Pan American Health Organization<br />

(PAHO)<br />

We maintain close links with our Regional Office and with the responsible person for m<strong>en</strong>tal<br />

health programs, Dr. Jorge Rodríguez, Chief of PAHO Regional M<strong>en</strong>tal Health, Substance<br />

Abuse and Rehabilitation Unit, Washington, DC.<br />

(A) "PAHO Regional M<strong>en</strong>tal Health Strategy and Plan of Action"<br />

At the request of PAHO, our <strong>CC</strong> revised this PAHO docum<strong>en</strong>t on m<strong>en</strong>tal health.<br />

(C) Barbados<br />

In March <strong>2010</strong>, Dr. Laporta w<strong>en</strong>t on an official mission to the sub-regional office of PAHO in<br />

Barbados to att<strong>en</strong>d the meeting on m<strong>en</strong>tal health in emerg<strong>en</strong>cies and disasters.<br />

In this context, he was invited to join a study group on emerg<strong>en</strong>cies and disasters in the<br />

subregion. The task force is curr<strong>en</strong>tly finalizing a formal docum<strong>en</strong>t on the subject for<br />

stakeholders in those countries.<br />
