MEDICAL EMERGENCY
OR SERIOUS INJURY
IMMEDIATE ACTION
In a medical emergency or serious injury:
1. Stay Calm
2. Keep Safe – prevent yourself from becoming a casualty too
3. Phone for an ambulance on 9 111
4. Have a Health Representative meet the paramedics and accompany them
to the injured person.
5. Give first aid until the arrival of paramedics or qualified medical
expert arrives.
Serious means (but is not limited to):
• Unconscious/not rousable/no response
• Major bleeding
• Possible heart attack/stroke
• Obvious bone injury/fracture
• Serious neck or back injury
Personnel Responsibilities
First Aider
Because of the frequency and serious nature of many accidents, the role of
the First Aider is very important. In the management of a casualty, your
responsibility as a First Aider is to:
• Assess the situation without endangering your own life.
• Identify the disease or condition from which the casualty is suffering
(diagnosis).
• Give immediate, appropriate and adequate treatment
• Arrange, without delay, for the transfer of a casualty to a doctor, hospital or
home, according to the seriousness of the casualty’s condition.
• Your responsibility ends when the casualty is handed over to the care of a
doctor, a nurse, ambulance officer or other appropriate person. You should
not leave the incident until you have made your report to whoever takes
charge and have ascertained whether you could be of any further help
Note: Do not touch the area of the serious harm injury until an investigation
has been conducted, unless to move the person to safety, or to prevent
further injury to another person or damage to plant.
