Lady Cougars hound Wolves
Bounce back with
impressive win
After its upset defeat at home
against Monument Mountain
last Saturday, the Quaboag
girls basketball team had a quick turnaround.
And it was all for the good.
“We’re tested when we play the better
teams,” said coach Al Button. “It’s what
we want. Our girls are a great group of
kids. They’ve worked hard all season.”
As in past years, the Cougars have
been able to dominate the lower half
of the Southern Worcester County
League.
After they dismantled David Prouty
in Spencer, center Brittany Herring, averaging
9.3 ppg, commented, “We know
we have to keep playing as hard as we
can, no matter who we play. The lower
half of the league may not be that hard
for us to beat, but we have to continue
to play good.”
The Cougars had won over a 100
consecutive SWCL games at home during
this decade. It has included a long
such streak against the Wolverines. On
Monday, the Cougars jumped out to a
12-7 lead after the fi rst quarter.
Afterward, they dominated, outscoring
Leicester 36-12 in the second and
third periods.
The Cougars were led in scoring by
point guard Jessica Korzec, who scored
13. Jess McCann, whose improved scoring
off of the bench has been a big plus,
added 12. Quaboag, which has now
won seven of nine, closes out the regular
The Mid-Wachusett swimming
The Tantasqua teams fi nished seventh
The girls placed sixth, with 202, while the
win by the boys at 410 well ahead of
Westborough and Wachusett. Their girls
did well with a solid third behind Gardner
and Bromfi eld.
Cougars
rise to the
occasion
- WARREN -
By Bob Schron
Turley Publications Sports Correspondent
This is one of Quaboag’s best seasons
in boys basketball.
Overachieving, the Cougars
have risen to the top of the SWCL West
and are fi ghting for the title.
The 11-4 Cougars held serve on
Monday, keeping pace with their challengers.
Jake Wisniewski scored a seasonhigh
30 points to pace Quaboag to a
59-49 win.
Without frontcourt strength in all
prognostications, Quaboag instead has
integrated the talent and determination
of senior Scott Duncan and the promise
of Greg Sokol to be representative
underneath.
The role players, sharpshooter Josh
Toppin, Nick Schlosstein and swingman
Ethan Lacaire have stepped in and
made an impact, unassumingly
The crowning touch of all of this however
is the team’s star players. In Player
What a difference a month
can make. For the Tantasqua
boys basketball
team, the return to relatively full
health and a revamped frontcourt
has transformed the team into a
contender.
Witness Monday night: Avenging
a December defeat at the hands
of Division 1 contender Shepherd
throughout to defeat the Rams,
69-49.
This season started out with a
dominating performance by guard
Corey Gatta in the team’s road win
