season with games against Southbridge,
Bartlett, David Prouty and Leicester.
Against Southbridge, the Cougars
expected to encounter the same type of
pressing attack that plagued them in the
teams’ fi rst meeting, a 13-point Quaboag
home win.
“They are an excellent team who are
very well-coached,” said Button. “They
mix things up defensively. Their team
speed and character make them tough for
us.”
In the fi rst game between the teams at
Quaboag, the Cougars pushed out to a
15-point lead in the middle of the second
quarter behind Korzec. But the Pioneers
were able to speed up the tempo and prevented
the Cougars from working their
inside-out game with Herring.
“Their defense had everything to do
with it,” said Button. We just needed to
be more patient.”
But it’s the time of the year when the
Cougars, though lacking the tournament
experience from past years, will be working
on becoming tournament-ready.
“We’re always going to be trying to
work on things,” Herring said after the
victory over the Panthers. “The teams we
play may not measure up to us right now.
But we always have to try to get better
ourselves.”
Korzec leads the Cougars in scoring
with a 12.2 ppg average. Ally Plante is
second with a 9.4 average, Herring third
and Lauren Lacaire is averaging 6.9 ppg.
Sutton (12-2) and Hopedale (12-3) remain
the likely top seeds for the Districts
that will be coming up inside of a month.
hometowns were: Cameron Bourke
– Spencer (14-year-olds), Andrew Romano
– Spencer (13-year-olds), Dustin
VanDyke – Spencer (12-year-olds),
and Braedon Hatt (10-year-olds) –
East Brookfi eld. Unfortunately, there
were no female contestants or males in
the 11-year-old divisions.
The winners now progress to
the district competition that will
be held Feb. 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the
Saint Louis School, 50 Negus St.,
Webster. Winners in the district
competition will progress through
the regional and state competitions.
International champions are announced
by the K of C international
headquarters based on scores from
the state level competitions.
The Westfi eld State Swim team
fi nished the season with a 148.50-
126.50 win over Western Connecticut
State University.
It was the 19th straight year that Owls
had a winning season. They took an immediate
lead and never looked back.
Swimming for Westfi eld State was
freshman Jess Lindsay from Brimfi eld,
who attended Tantasqua before coming
to Westfi eld. Lindsay took third place
in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of
100-yard backstroke in 1:08.74.
The Owls jumped out to a quick lead
in the meet with a fi rst and third fi nish in
the 200-yard medley relay. The winning
foursome in 1:59.87 was Laura Sauriol,
Kirsten Lamotte, Lauren Connolly and
Jenna Tasse. It was third for Amanda
LaBriola, Jennifer Rodger, Emily Fullerton
and Darcy Fortune. That fi nish
made it a 13-4 score.
Westfi eld then picked up big points
in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 1-2-3
sweep. Katie Cox won in 11:30.54; Katie
Inoue was second, 29 seconds behind
Cox; Nikki Brunyak, 45 seconds back
from Inoue, was third. They scored 16 of
the 19 points available in the event. That
was followed by a win in the 200 freestyle
by Kate Werner in 2:12.06. Katie Lahive
and Carron were third and fourth. The
Westfi eld lead had grown to 43-12.
After these events, the meet moved
along quickly in the next four events,
three of which were 50s. Labriola got
second for the Owls in the 50-yard back-
Kimberly Leon. Lamotte, 33.42 won the
50-yard breaststroke, with Rodger taking
third and Connolly in fi fth. Kaylee
Hopkins was the top fi nisher for Westfi
eld State with a third in the 100-yard
butterfl y. Sharon Fortune and Kiley
Perrone placed fourth and fi fth. In the
50-yard freestyle, it was Tasse taking fi rst
Fullerton and Leon right behind. As the
meet entered the 1-meter diving, Westfi
eld State had an 86.5 to 43.5 lead over
Western Connecticut.
After a 1-2-5 fi nish in diving by the
Owls from Kimi Schmidt, Katie Sterpka
and Kathleen Jwanowski, the swimming
resumed with Tasse winning the 100yard
freestyle in 56.00. Darcy Fortune
and Sharon Fortune were third and
fourth. Western Connecticut would win
the next four individual events. Sauriol
was second in the 100-yard backstroke
with Labriola and Fullerton in third and
fourth; LaMotte was second in the 100yard
breaststroke with Rodger in third
and Lahive in fi fth. Cox got second in
the 500-yard freestyle, followed by Inoue
and Werner. In the 50-yard butterfl y,
Lamotte took second, Connolly (third)
the four events, net losses for the Owls,
they had more than enough to win with
a 148.5-93.5 lead and coach Dave Laing
had his swimmer go exhibition that
would not add to the score. Schmidt,
Jwanowski and Sterpka dove in the 3meter
competition. Cox, Darcy Fortune
and Perrone were second, third and
fourth in time in the 100-yard individual
medley. The meet concluded with the
200-yard freestyle relays. All Westfi eld
State combinations were unoffi cial.
