The Alligator Watch out! Here comes the king (or queen) of the Everglades—the alligator. This reptile is at the top of the Everglades food chain. That means that it has few enemies. You should be very careful around this animal. It may look slow, but it’s not. It can move suddenly and quickly for food. And the alligator is not a picky eater. It will eat raccoons with all their fur, birds with all their feathers, and even turtles in their shells. The alligator and the crocodile are cousins. And the only place in the world where you can see them both is right here. Crocodiles are harder to spot than alligators. That is because they are endangered. There are as few as 400 left here so seeing one is very rare. Alligators look like logs in the water. That makes them dangerous. 11
