As happened with Mini manual gearboxes at similar dates, the idler gear shaft diameter (i.e. idler gear<br />

bearing internal diameter) and the bearing seat diameter in the torque converter housing (idler gear<br />

bearing external diameter) changed a couple of times. To be safe, measure the internal and exter nal<br />

diameters of your bearing before ordering. Note that the idler gear thrust washers, listed later on this<br />

page, also changed to 7/8” inter nal diameter when the AHU1707 bearing arrived around 1982.<br />

Torque Converter Gear Train<br />

Note if you have a 1965 or early 1996 Mini Automatic that the output gear train is unique and is not<br />

itemised here. Factory advice for these models is to replace all three gears with those shown here,<br />

together with the relevant thrust washers and shims .<br />

If you are unsure that the age of your Mini’s transmission matches the age of the car, you will need to<br />

work out whether you have pre-A Plus or A Plus output gears. A Plus gears were introduced on the<br />

Mini round about 1982 (at different times on different models...), and have a sharper tooth angle and<br />

different pitch making them quieter than,but definitely not interchangeable with, the earlier gears. A<br />

Plus gears can be identified by the presence of a circumferential groove in the centre of the teeth.<br />

Once fitted, the primary gear bushes must be machined to ensure alignment with each other. Confusion<br />

often reigns over the convention for naming primary gear bushes. Which should be called the front bush<br />

and which should be the rear The answer is the bush closer to the front of the engine (i.e. the water<br />

pump end) is the front bush and the bush on the torque converter end (the ‘top hat’ bush) is the rear<br />
