Affairs. Guthmiller began the<br />
transition into her role at <strong>UNC</strong><br />
beginning in January <strong>2007</strong>,<br />
focusing her time in Chapel Hill<br />
on beginning a major revision<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>’s<br />
predoctoral (DDS) curriculum.<br />
She will fully transition to her<br />
new role in July.<br />

Eric M. Rivera,<br />
DDS ’85, MS ’89,<br />
associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
was appointed chairman<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>UNC</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>’s<br />
Rivera<br />
Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Endodontics on February 1.<br />
A faculty member at the school<br />
since 2003, Rivera previously<br />
served as interim chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />
department.<br />
Rivera previously served as<br />
graduate program director and<br />
chairman <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Endodontics at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Iowa College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. His<br />
career experience has spanned<br />
academic, private practice and<br />
corporate settings. His research<br />
areas include the biochemical and<br />
functional aspects <strong>of</strong> collagen<br />
cross-linking and structure <strong>of</strong><br />
dentin related to tooth fracture<br />
and the use <strong>of</strong> calcium hydroxide<br />
as a medicine in root canal therapy.<br />
