Dr. Janet M. Guthmiller,
associate professor within the
University of
Iowa College of
Dentistry’s department
of periodontics
and Dows Institute
for Dental Research,
Guthmiller
has been appointed
associate dean for Academic
Affairs. Guthmiller began the
transition into her role at UNC
beginning in January 2007,
focusing her time in Chapel Hill
on beginning a major revision
of the School of Dentistry’s
predoctoral (DDS) curriculum.
She will fully transition to her
new role in July.

Continuing Education
Sue C. Felton, director of continuing
dental education, became
the Chair-elect of the Continuing
Education section of the
American Dental Education
Association (ADEA) at their
annual meeting in New Orleans
in March 2007.

Department of Diagnostic
Sciences and General
Dentistry
Donald Tyndall, DDS ’80,
MSPH, ’84, PhD ’88, professor,
was elected to the
American Academy
of Oral and
Maxillofacial
Radiology
(AAOMR)
Tyndall Executive Council as
Councilor for Scientific Affairs
and Public Policy. This election
result was announced at the
annual AAOMR meeting in
Kansas City, MO, in November
2006.

Department of Endodontics
Eric M. Rivera,
DDS ’85, MS ’89,
associate professor,
was appointed chairman
of the UNC
School of Dentistry’s
Rivera
Department of
Endodontics on February 1.
A faculty member at the school
since 2003, Rivera previously
served as interim chairman of the
department.
Rivera previously served as
graduate program director and
chairman of the Department of
Endodontics at the University of
Iowa College of Dentistry. His
career experience has spanned
academic, private practice and
corporate settings. His research
areas include the biochemical and
functional aspects of collagen
cross-linking and structure of
dentin related to tooth fracture
and the use of calcium hydroxide
as a medicine in root canal therapy.

Operative Dentistry
Harald O. Heymann, DDS ’78,
professor and director of the
Operative Dentistry Graduate
Program, lectured
at the Chicago
Midwinter Meeting
in February 2007
and served as
moderator of a
Heymann
Symposium entitled,
“Ethics in Esthetic Dentistry”
with panelists, Drs. Gordon
Christensen, Frank Spear, Terry
Donovan (of UNC), and Mark
Friedman.
