ENNEAD, one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong>’s<br />

student volunteer groups, completed<br />

a two-day mobile dental<br />

clinic this past November at the<br />

Shelter Rock Ministries facility in<br />

Foscoe, NC. ENNEAD, Shelter<br />

Rock Ministries, NC’s Missions<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mercy (established by Steve<br />

Slott, DDS ’84), and local volunteer<br />

dentists, dental hygienists,<br />

and dental assistants participated<br />

in treating over 250 patients<br />

with cleanings, fillings, and<br />

extractions.<br />

Nimet Adatia, DDS, a graduate<br />

student in the department <strong>of</strong><br />

prosthodontics, won the 2006<br />

John J. Sharry Prosthodontic<br />

Research Competition at the<br />

American College <strong>of</strong><br />

Prosthodontists’ annual session in<br />

November in Miami. Sponsored<br />

by the American College <strong>of</strong><br />

Prosthodontists Education<br />

Foundation, the competition is<br />

designed to stimulate and<br />

acknowledge original student<br />

research in prosthodontics.<br />

Adatia’s abstract was titled<br />

“Fracture Resistance <strong>of</strong> Y-TZP<br />

Dental Implant Ceramic<br />

Abutments.” She is the 2006-<br />

<strong>2007</strong> Astra Tech Dental Implant<br />

Fellow at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong><br />

and received both her undergraduate<br />

and DDS degrees from the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alberta.<br />

Carrie Bigelow, BS,<br />

RDH, a second year<br />

graduate student in<br />

the Dental Hygiene<br />

Education Master <strong>of</strong><br />

Bigelow Science degree program,<br />

is conducting<br />

a full time internship during the<br />

spring semester at the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> British Columbia. Under the<br />

direction <strong>of</strong> Bonnie J. Craig,<br />

RDH, M.Ed., Carrie will assist in<br />

administrative program planning<br />

and implementation for a new,<br />

four year dental hygiene program<br />

at UBC. Carrie will also have the<br />

opportunity to work with the<br />

British Columbia College <strong>of</strong><br />

Dental Hygienists, the regulatory<br />

authority for the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong><br />

dental hygiene in Canada, learning<br />

more about laws and ethics as<br />

they relate to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession in<br />

Canada. Carrie has been invited<br />

to present her thesis research to<br />

the British Columbia Oral<br />

Prevention Program, housed at<br />

Vancouver General Hospital.<br />

Carrie worked with Dr. Lauren<br />

Patton on a project entitled,<br />

“Dental Hygienists' Views on<br />

Oral Cancer Control in <strong>North</strong><br />

Carolina.”<br />

Danielle Furgeson, BS, RDH, a<br />

second year graduate student in<br />

the Dental Hygiene Education<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree program,<br />

has been selected to assume<br />

a new position at the American<br />

Dental Hygienists’ Association<br />

(ADHA) effective May <strong>2007</strong>.<br />

Danielle, who is conducting a<br />

full time internship at ADHA in<br />

Chicago, IL during the spring<br />

semester, will complete her <strong>UNC</strong><br />

graduate degree in May and will<br />

become the first ever ADHA<br />

Manager <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Student American<br />

Dental Hygienists’<br />

Association<br />

(SADHA). She<br />

conducted her thesis<br />

research in the<br />

Furgeson<br />

area <strong>of</strong> SADHA and her project<br />

is entitled “Role <strong>of</strong> the Student<br />

American Dental Hygienists’<br />

Association in Mentoring Dental<br />

Hygiene Students for the<br />

Future.” Danielle is also the<br />

ADHA student member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Committee on National Boards<br />

for the 2006-<strong>2007</strong> fiscal year.<br />

This committee will meet in<br />

March with the ADA Joint<br />

Commission on National Dental<br />

Examinations’ Committee on<br />

Dental Hygiene.<br />

Christina Karamini, DDS, a<br />

graduate student in the department<br />

<strong>of</strong> prosthodontics, was<br />

among three finalists for the<br />

2006 John J. Sharry<br />

Prosthodontic Research<br />
