WINERY FEATURE | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK Turnbull Wine Cellars – Napa Valley by Abigail P. Zimmerman The Turnbull name dates back to the early 1300s when a Game Keeper of Robert the Bruce saved the king’s life by turning away a ferocious bull that had threatened to gore the king. The grateful king knighted his subject “Turnbull” and awarded him a crest featuring a bull’s head twisted back that has adorned the wines crafted by this classic Napa Valley Winery since its founding in 1979 by American architect William Turnbull. Turnbull’s wines are all estate grown on four exceptional ranches. When it comes to great wine, the secret is to start with the best fruit. A key component of quality, Turnbull fruit captures the unique character of the land that the fruit is grown. To achieve this end, Turnbull Wine Cellars farms with care and sensitivity so that their wines showcase the uniqueness of each ranch and each growing season. Turnbull Wine Cellars crafts its awardwinning wines using fruit sourced from estate vineyards in Oakville and Calistoga. The diversity of fruit sourcing and exemplary viticultural work allows their winemaking team the ability to create wines with distinctive flavors that capture the personality of each site. Soils vary from deeper alluvial fans on the valley floor to the shallow, volcanic and rocky structures of the hillsides. The wines at Turnbull Wine Cellars are a reflection of the soils from which they originate. Winemaker Peter Heitz carefully captures these nuances without overpowering each varietal’s natural characteristics. Tasting at Turnbull Turnbull Cellars in Napa Valley offers two distinct Tasting Rooms catering to guests and their budgets. Fortunately, each Tasting Room offers Turnbull’s 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, the label’s signature wine. Famed wine critic Robert Parker writes “the brilliant 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is the real deal!” Produced from predominately Oakville fruit, the 2007 Cabernet is approximately 75% Cabernet with the remaining 25% a blend of premier Bordeaux varietals. Aged for 18 months in French Oak barrels, the 2007 Cabernet is hand-crafted to highlight and blend the best flavors and aromas of Turnbull’s four estate vineyards. For only $40 per bottle, this 92 points Cabernet consistently over-delivers on quality. Turnbull’s Reserve Tasting Room and Art Gallery is to your left, as you enter the Winery. This cavernous room holds barrels – floor to vaulted ceiling. For $20 per person, guests may personally choose four Reserve wines from Turnbull’s – usually Cabernet – single vineyard and select releases. While visiting the Reserve Room, guests will be fortunate to experience the Turnbull 2007 Black Label Cabernet ($100). Scoring 94 points from Robert Parker and a glowing review, he describes this wine as “perhaps the best wine I have ever tasted from Turnbull” with compelling flavors of “blueberry, blackberry, cassis, licorice, camphor and graphite. This wine is intense and full-bodied.” Indeed, the 2007 Black Label Cabernet is carefully created from the best fruits in single blocks from Turnbull’s top Estate Vineyards, Leopoldina, Amoenus and Fortuna. The winery was designed by Architect William Turnbull, who had just finished designing Cakebread, Fisher and Newton wineries. But when it came to designing his own winery, Turnbull chose to create a more low-key, subtle space that was in tune with its environment. William Turnbull once said that “you want to have an image of a winery that cares about the last drop of wine in the bottle.” He certainly created such a place and, today, the winery still speaks to excellence in wine. In 1993, Patrick O’Dell purchased the winery and renamed it Turnbull Wine Cellars. World Class Fine Art Photography Turnbull Wine Cellars also quietly boasts one of the finest permanent photography collections on the West Coast of the United States. Turnbull displays two exhibits each year, with works selected from an extensive collection. Each exhibition features 60 to 90 privately owned and original works by master photographers including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Berenice Abbott, Edward Striechen and Yousuf Karsh. Guests in the Reserve Room are able to explore these stunning works of art while enjoying Turnbull’s awardwinning estate and reserve wines. Starting April 16, 2011 Turnbull Cellars will present “Modernism – Photography after 1930.” Food & Wine Education Courses Turnbull offers private wine and food pairing courses in their exclusive VIP Room, set off a quiet brick patio and garden. Here guests will not only learn how wine pairs with certain foods but how certain wines do NOT pair well with other foods. This is simply a real education led by Turnbull’s in-house chef who creates an ever-changing menu based on seasonal and local ingredients. Turnbull offers this class for $40.
