Problem gamblers face individual costs and <strong>the</strong>y create costs for <strong>the</strong><br />
community.<br />
Information in ovals indicates costs to <strong>the</strong> individual problem gambler<br />
and <strong>the</strong> number of problem gamblers affected annually according to <strong>the</strong><br />
National Gambling Survey undertaken in 1999. 10<br />
Information in rectangles indicates <strong>the</strong> maximum estimated cost to <strong>the</strong><br />
community annually in millions of dollars.<br />
<strong>What</strong> you have to do (worksheet activity)<br />
Working in pairs or small groups (with reference to <strong>the</strong> A3 worksheet),<br />
place <strong>the</strong> information in each oval and rectangle in <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />
place on <strong>the</strong> ‘Personal and community costs of problem gambling’<br />
master page. After you have completed <strong>the</strong> master page, answer <strong>the</strong><br />
four questions below.<br />
1. <strong>What</strong> percentage of <strong>the</strong> problem gamblers who considered suicide<br />
attempted suicide?<br />
2. <strong>What</strong> fraction of <strong>the</strong> gamblers who appe<strong>are</strong>d in court were sent to<br />
jail?<br />
3. There <strong>are</strong> 290 000 adult problem gamblers in Australia. Would you<br />
expect <strong>the</strong> numbers in <strong>the</strong> ovals to add to 290 000? Give at least<br />
two reasons for your answer.<br />
4. Calculate <strong>the</strong> total annual cost to <strong>the</strong> community of problem<br />
gambling. Express your answer in millions of dollars, correct to two<br />
significant figures.<br />
