STRUCTURES/VALLADOLID FOOTBRIDGE<br />
Technological Manifesto<br />
at the Science Museum<br />
Conceived by the architects<br />
José Rafael Moneo and<br />
Enrique de Teresa, this<br />
contemporary/unique design for the<br />
Valladolid Science Museum’s (Spa<strong>in</strong>)<br />
new footbridge illustrates the<br />
creative possibilities available us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with prestress<strong>in</strong>g and stay cables.<br />
OPENED LAST JULY 28TH, a footbridge<br />
designed with a fish basket<br />
<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d crosses the Pisuerga<br />
river and connects the city center<br />
with the Valladolid Science<br />
Museum. <strong>The</strong> 234 m structure is<br />
notably composed of a hexagonal<br />
prism <strong>in</strong>side which the pedestrians<br />
walk. After construction of the piers<br />
and cast <strong>in</strong> situ construction of a<br />
white concrete span, the elements<br />
were <strong>in</strong>stalled us<strong>in</strong>g a crane. <strong>The</strong><br />
central span was put <strong>in</strong> place us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a barge.<br />
“This section, the longest <strong>in</strong> the<br />
structure, <strong>in</strong>volved longitud<strong>in</strong>al<br />
and hexagonal prestress<strong>in</strong>g,” specified<br />
Patrick Ladret, technical director<br />
of Freyss<strong>in</strong>et SA <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. Each<br />
of the 15 sections was prestressed<br />
with a peripheral cable that passes<br />
over the six crests of the hexagon.<br />
This orig<strong>in</strong>al design led Freyss<strong>in</strong>et<br />
to develop, under the supervision<br />
of the Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Consultancy<br />
Company MC2, a deviation saddle<br />
for <strong>in</strong>conspicuous passage of the<br />
cable and effective transmission of<br />
stress. Based on full-scale tests performed<br />
at PPC, the Group’s factory,<br />
