K<strong>in</strong>gdom), the Freyss<strong>in</strong>et<br />
teams totaled almost<br />
100 collaborators <strong>in</strong> the<br />
f<strong>in</strong>al phases of stay cable<br />
<strong>in</strong>stallation. Freyss<strong>in</strong>et also<br />
contributed, though<br />
with fewer numbers, to<br />
the deck launch<strong>in</strong>g phase<br />
by perform<strong>in</strong>g tension<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and release of the<br />
launch<strong>in</strong>g cables.<br />

to “un-nail” and then<br />
“re-nail” the deck.<br />

past 10 years <strong>in</strong> the construction of<br />
several bridges of the same size was<br />
probably the decid<strong>in</strong>g factor for<br />
Eiffel,” concludes Manuel Peltier. n<br />
ON SITE<br />
Tools to Support the Methods<br />
From June 2003 to April 2004 deck launch<strong>in</strong>g, performed dur<strong>in</strong>g "breaks <strong>in</strong> the weather” that lasted on<br />
average four days, required double the effort from the Freyss<strong>in</strong>et teams. On the piers and temporary<br />
bents, <strong>in</strong>stalled to divide each 342 m span <strong>in</strong>to 171 m sub-spans, this phase <strong>in</strong>volved un-nail<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />
deck follow<strong>in</strong>g by re-nail<strong>in</strong>g after launch<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
On pylons P2 and P3 24 stay cables were used as launch<strong>in</strong>g cables to support the cantilevered deck<br />
and, under the effect of deck deformations, were successively tensioned when the deck reached the<br />
bents and piers and were then loosened. To limit and control angular deformation at the anchor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ts they were <strong>in</strong>stalled on pylons and the deck was placed on special deviation saddles. “<strong>The</strong>se<br />
devices,” expla<strong>in</strong>s Jean-Luc Br<strong>in</strong>ger, “guarantee that the cable strands will not be subjected to comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
stress due to tension and bend<strong>in</strong>g greater than 60% of the guaranteed break<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t and that the<br />
anchor<strong>in</strong>g and anti-corrosion systems will not be damaged dur<strong>in</strong>g launch<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
