On Nov. 13, 2010, Independent <strong>Music</strong> Store<br />

Owners (iMSO) members from around<br />

the United States hosted Strings for Food,<br />

an annual event that lets indie music store<br />

owners and their customers feed the hungry.<br />

Customers that donated non-perishable<br />

food items to participating dealerships received<br />

a complimentary guitar restringing<br />

— free strings included. The stores covered<br />

promotional expenses, installation labor and<br />

presented donated food to local food banks.<br />

The 25 participating retailers changed 1,150<br />

sets of strings and raised more than 6,650<br />

pounds of food.<br />

“[Strings for Food] is a great event that<br />

brings customers, store owners and vendors<br />

together for a common cause,” said<br />

Lisa Kirkwood, co-owner of Discount <strong>Music</strong><br />

of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla. “I am<br />

humbled by the generosity of our sponsoring<br />

vendors and the musicians who brought in<br />

over 3 tons of food.”<br />

Such vendors as D’Addario, SIT and Curt<br />

Mangan Strings donated accessories to the<br />

event. The <strong>Music</strong>al Instrument Reclamation<br />

Corp. also donated guitars that were raffled<br />

off at the event.<br />

Mark MacLeod<br />

Mark MacLeod, co-owner of Family Piano and Joplin’s Java & Ragtime Café in Waukegan,<br />

Ill., died suddenly during an outpatient medical procedure on Nov. 23, 2010. He was 48.<br />

MacLeod opened his dealership with business partner Alice Alviani in 2007. According<br />

to the company’s website, the store will remain open.<br />

A classically trained pianist, MacLeod graduated from Antioch College and studied<br />

at Chicago’s American Conservatory of <strong>Music</strong>. He worked as a piano technician for<br />

more than 25 years and served as a member of the Piano Technicians Guild.<br />
