<strong>Yvonne</strong> <strong>Gonzalez</strong> <strong>Rogers</strong> <strong>Confirmed</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>Federal</strong><br />

<strong>Judge</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Northern</strong> District of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia<br />

SAN FRANCISCO – The United States Senate today confirmed President Obama’s nomination<br />

of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia (Alameda County) Superior Court <strong>Judge</strong> <strong>Yvonne</strong> <strong>Gonzalez</strong> <strong>Rogers</strong> to serve <strong>as</strong> a<br />

district judge on the U.S. District Court <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Northern</strong> District of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia.<br />

<strong>Judge</strong> <strong>Gonzalez</strong> <strong>Rogers</strong>, 46, w<strong>as</strong> confirmed on an 89-6 voice vote of the Senate. She is expected<br />

to receive her commission shortly and will fill a judgeship vacant since February 28, 2011, when<br />

Chief District <strong>Judge</strong> Vaughn R. Walker retired.<br />

<strong>Judge</strong> <strong>Gonzalez</strong> <strong>Rogers</strong> w<strong>as</strong> appointed to the state court bench in 2008 by then-Gov. Arnold<br />

Schwarzenegger and currently maintains chambers in Oakland.<br />

A native of San Antonio, Tex<strong>as</strong>, <strong>Judge</strong> <strong>Gonzalez</strong> <strong>Rogers</strong> received her A.B. in 1987 from<br />

Princeton University, graduating cum laude, and her J.D. from the University of Tex<strong>as</strong>, School<br />

of Law, in 1991.<br />

Prior to her appointment to the state bench, <strong>Judge</strong> <strong>Gonzalez</strong> <strong>Rogers</strong> served in Alameda County<br />

Superior Court <strong>as</strong> a pro tem judge from 2007 to 2008, and <strong>as</strong> member of the civil grand jury from<br />

2005 to 2007, serving <strong>as</strong> a <strong>for</strong>eperson from 2006 to 2007. She engaged in private practice at the<br />

San Francisco law firm of Cooley Godward LLP (now Cooley LLP), where she w<strong>as</strong> a litigator<br />

from 1991 to 2003 and an equity partner from 1999 to 2001.<br />

The U.S. District Court <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Northern</strong> District of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia had 6,931 new c<strong>as</strong>e filings in<br />

fiscal year 2010. The court is authorized 14 judgeships and currently h<strong>as</strong> one vacancy.<br />

<strong>Federal</strong> district court judges, appointed under Article III of the Constitution, are nominated by<br />

the president, confirmed by the Senate and serve lifetime appointments upon good behavior.<br />

Their current annual salary is $174,000.<br />
