Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers Confirmed as Federal
Judge for Northern District of California
SAN FRANCISCO – The United States Senate today confirmed President Obama’s nomination
of California (Alameda County) Superior Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to serve as a
district judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Judge Gonzalez Rogers, 46, was confirmed on an 89-6 voice vote of the Senate. She is expected
to receive her commission shortly and will fill a judgeship vacant since February 28, 2011, when
Chief District Judge Vaughn R. Walker retired.
Judge Gonzalez Rogers was appointed to the state court bench in 2008 by then-Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger and currently maintains chambers in Oakland.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Judge Gonzalez Rogers received her A.B. in 1987 from
Princeton University, graduating cum laude, and her J.D. from the University of Texas, School
of Law, in 1991.
Prior to her appointment to the state bench, Judge Gonzalez Rogers served in Alameda County
Superior Court as a pro tem judge from 2007 to 2008, and as member of the civil grand jury from
2005 to 2007, serving as a foreperson from 2006 to 2007. She engaged in private practice at the
San Francisco law firm of Cooley Godward LLP (now Cooley LLP), where she was a litigator
from 1991 to 2003 and an equity partner from 1999 to 2001.
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California had 6,931 new case filings in
fiscal year 2010. The court is authorized 14 judgeships and currently has one vacancy.

Federal district court judges, appointed under Article III of the Constitution, are nominated by
the president, confirmed by the Senate and serve lifetime appointments upon good behavior.
Their current annual salary is $174,000.
