JUDGE TOMAR MASON TO RETIRE AFTER <str<strong>on</strong>g>21</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

YEARS ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BENCH<br />

SAN FRANCISCO -- <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tomar</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> will retire <strong>on</strong> December 31, 2011<br />

after serving <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> bench of <strong>the</strong> <strong>San</strong> <strong>Francisco</strong> Superior and Municipal Courts for <str<strong>on</strong>g>21</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

years, Presiding <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ka<strong>the</strong>rine Feinstein announced <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>day.<br />

“It has been an h<strong>on</strong>or <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> serve <strong>the</strong> citizens of <strong>the</strong> City & County of<br />

<strong>San</strong> <strong>Francisco</strong> for more than two decades,” <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> said. “I have a deep respect<br />

and admirati<strong>on</strong> for my fellow bench officers, Court staff and members of <strong>the</strong> bar who<br />

have enriched my experience in <strong>San</strong> <strong>Francisco</strong>. Dispensing justice has been a distinct<br />

privilege for me throughout my tenure as a Municipal and Superior Court <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g>. I<br />

will truly miss our Court family, my fascinating cases, our intelligent <strong>San</strong> <strong>Francisco</strong><br />

jurors and <strong>the</strong> absolutely phenomenal lawyers.”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> Feinstein added, “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> has offered much of her time and<br />

enthusiastic dedicati<strong>on</strong> bey<strong>on</strong>d her formal bench duties <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> serve <strong>the</strong> citizens of <strong>the</strong><br />

City & County of <strong>San</strong> <strong>Francisco</strong>. We are all extremely grateful <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> for her<br />

many years of dedicated public service and c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> our Court.”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> was a member of <strong>the</strong> Municipal Court, where she served from<br />

1990 – 1998, including a term as Presiding <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g>. She served as a Superior Court<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> since c<strong>on</strong>solidati<strong>on</strong> in 1998.<br />

Some of her notable special assignments have included development of:<br />

• Manda<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry e-filing and e-service for asbes<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>s cases;<br />

• Drug Court in <strong>San</strong> <strong>Francisco</strong>;<br />

• Expanded pre-trial services; and <strong>the</strong><br />

• Bail commissi<strong>on</strong>er project.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> also served as chair of <strong>the</strong> Asbes<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>s Committee and managed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Court’s justice grants.<br />

Her c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s include participati<strong>on</strong> in many nati<strong>on</strong>al efforts, including<br />

service as <strong>the</strong> Vice President and Trustee of <strong>the</strong> Pretrial Services Resources Center,<br />

and as a member of <strong>the</strong> Youth Law Center’s Board of Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs. She is a founding<br />

member of <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Associati<strong>on</strong> of Drug Court Professi<strong>on</strong>als and also served <strong>on</strong><br />

several committees of <strong>the</strong> American Correcti<strong>on</strong>al Associati<strong>on</strong>. She served twice as<br />

President of <strong>the</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong> for Criminal Justice Research of California, between 2003<br />

– 2005 and 1998-1999. Given her expertise in Drug Court development, she was a<br />

founding member and President of <strong>the</strong> California Associati<strong>on</strong> of Drug Court<br />

Professi<strong>on</strong>als.<br />

Prior <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> her judicial career, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Judge</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> served as a deputy at<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rney general.<br />

She also served as a deputy district at<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rney and a deputy county counsel in <strong>San</strong>ta<br />

Clara County. In Fresno County, she served as a deputy district at<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rney.<br />

A graduate of Michigan State University, she earned her J.D. from UCLA<br />

School of Law.<br />
