ANNUAL NURSING REPORT 2011 — QUALITY
Fall Prevention Workshop
On August 2, 2011 many caregivers attended an educational activity
that presented significant findings, implications, outcomes, and
process recommendations suggested by the literature on patient falls
in acute care hospitals. These findings were validated by a multispecialty
nursing unit pilot in the Medical/Surgical area of UNMH.
Staff gained knowledge and skill to assess a patient’s fall risk and
implement prevention strategies, and learned about a successful
quality improvement
project that resulted in
improved patient
outcomes.
DAISY Awards Coming to UNMH
UNMH announced in late 2011 that we would be participating in the
Daisy Award Program in 2012! The program was started in 1999 by
the family of a patient, Patrick Barnes. Patrick died of Idiopathic
Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY stands for
'Diseases Attacking the Immune System.'
The Barnes family wanted a way to remember their loved one, but also to
recognize the amazing compassionate care that bedside nurses give every
day, in addition to their clinical expertise. This is a national award program
for nurses and UNMH is glad to be a part of it. Visit http://

In the Excellence Spotlight: Sue Tobin, RN
Sue Tobin, Unit Director for Pediatric Clinic and Peds Infusion, was
selected in 2011 as the UNM College of Nursing New Alumni award
recipient! Sue was honored at the Homecoming Dinner in
September 2011. Congrats Sue — well done!
