<strong>Rising</strong> <strong>Stars</strong> Story Cards are a brand new series of<br />
beautifully illustrated cards, which can be used to:<br />

literacy and drama<br />
• Develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills<br />

READ<br />
When the children are settled for story<br />
time, ensure that they can see the cards<br />
easily. Read the text from the back of<br />
the card whilst drawing the children<br />
into the images and encouraging them<br />
to listen to the story.<br />

Teacher’s Notes accompany each pack of Story Cards<br />
and include:<br />
• Links to the literacy strategy and assessment<br />
focuses to make planning easier<br />
• Activity ideas to support speaking and listening,<br />
reading and responding, and writing, as well as<br />
cross-curricular lessons<br />
Step 3<br />
RESPOND AND ENRICH<br />
Encourage children to respond to the stories in<br />
a variety of ways including orally, dramatically,<br />
creatively and through writing. There are three<br />
photocopiable activities per story covering<br />
speaking and listening, reading and responding,<br />
and writing.<br />
Question prompts are also provided on the cards to<br />
support vocabulary development and discussion.<br />

A brief history of Kamishibai<br />
<strong>Rising</strong> <strong>Stars</strong> Story Cards have been developed to continue the<br />
tradition of the Kamishibai storytellers in 1920s Japan, who<br />
travelled across the countryside on bikes equipped with a small<br />
stage to show story cards. On entering a village they would<br />
strike two pieces of wood called hyoshigi, which was the signal<br />
for children to gather for story time. Then, in a dramatic<br />
manner, the storyteller would deliver Kamishibai stories. The<br />
tradition died out in the 1950s with the advent of television, but<br />
in recent years there has been resurgence in Japanese schools.
