Scope:<br />

The Association provides a cultural day centre mainly for African and Caribbean older<br />

people and Stroke and Alzheimer sufferers. We provide information and advice. A hot<br />

meal is provided as well as social activities such as exercise classes, arts and crafts,<br />

quizzes, games and health visitor sessions.<br />

Our mission is to “promote the well-being of our service users and to help make later<br />

life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience”. To achieve this mission we need to involve<br />

older people directly in defining needs, determining priorities and exerting control over<br />

the decisions which affect their lives.<br />

Responsibilities/ Duties / tasks<br />

To be responsible for the day to day management and administration of the<br />

service within agreed parameters.<br />

To organise and supervise the activities of the day and to prepare the day centre<br />

for each activity as necessary. These activities should include:<br />

Stimulation; Motivation; Health information/improvement; Meals and<br />

refreshments; Leisure activities; Outings<br />

To ensure person centred/ outcome based plans are created for all participants<br />

and volunteers to understand and meet their needs and measure/report on<br />

achievements<br />

To collate attendance figures, expenditure and income to ensure accurate<br />

reporting to the Management Committee


To initiate and further develop effective communications between the staff team,<br />

participants, stakeholders and the Management Committee.<br />

To maximise the appeal and “reach” of the organisation – both within the<br />

community, participant groups and other key stakeholders, seeking<br />

opportunities to expand and promote awareness of the service.<br />

To undertake marketing activities (blogs, website update, monthly newsletters,<br />

advertising, flyers etc)<br />

To ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with the values and<br />

ethos of BACA<br />

To have a clear vision and understanding of the purpose and direction for BACA<br />

and ensure that all parties share this.<br />

To coordinate and monitor the health & safety requirements and ensure risk<br />

assessments and risk management is in place for all activities, participants , staff<br />

and volunteers<br />

Ensure that the organisation fulfils its regulatory and legal obligations<br />

To measure success against set objectives with the Board<br />

Oversee all recruiting, inducting, managing and motivating the staff team (inc<br />

volunteers)<br />

To monitor person centred plans<br />

To facilitate high level service provision which, is at all times, user lead<br />

To direct the activities of the staff team to ensure planning of activity sessions<br />

and resources meet participant and stakeholder expectations.<br />

To conduct session observation and offer feedback , or suggest training<br />

solutions to enhance the service<br />

To continually seek opportunity to increase customer satisfaction and deepen<br />

relationships<br />

In addition to the duties and responsibilities list, the job holder is required to perform<br />

other duties assigned by the line manager from time to time which are commensurate<br />

with capability and status.

Health & Safety: The post holder is required to take reasonable care of their own<br />

health and safety and that of other people who may be affected by their acts or<br />

omissions at work and to ensure that statutory regulations, policies and codes of<br />

practice and departmental safety rules are adhered to.<br />

Adult Safeguarding: From the beginning of October 2011, Barnet Council and its<br />

partners will be using a new policy and set of procedures to make sure that adults at<br />

risk of abuse are kept safe. The new policy is being used by Local Authorities across<br />

London, to make sure that everyone is protected in the same way and that<br />

organisations such as the police and NHS who work across London only have one set<br />

of procedures to follow. The procedures aim to make sure that:<br />

the needs and interests of adults at risk are always respected and upheld<br />

the human rights of adults at risk are respected and upheld<br />

a proportionate, timely, professional and ethical response is made to any adult at<br />

risk who may be experiencing abuse<br />

all decisions and actions are taken in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005.<br />

The postholder should know about the policy and procedures and has a duty to act in a<br />

assessed and investigated.<br />

Training: You will keep under review your own developmental needs, keep yourself<br />

informed of current issues and be alert to BACA policies and procedures and attend all<br />

supervision meetings as advised by the Chair. It is your responsibility along with the<br />

Chair to identify training and development needs and to inform your line manager of<br />

these.
