Message From The Co ChairsThe past year has been an eventful one for BVSC as it has been for almost every person and organisation. However, this has not stopped the staff, management and trustees from seeking to progress and innovate for the benefit ofmembers and other stakeholders. We said a sad goodbye to Linda Turner after many excellent years as Chair and, for the first time have operated withCo-Chairs without any problems. We also were sad to see the departure of other long serving trustees but have been pleased to replace them withextremely able people. They have brought many skills to the table and their input has been invaluable. We offer ourgrateful thanks to all the Trustees for their most helpful contribution to the running of the organisation and to thestaff and management for so capably taking BVSC through stormy times. This year we celebrate our 30th anniversary and it is incredible how far we have come since our humble beginnings. But at BVSC we do not rest on our laurels. We have spent much time on reaching out to the whole of the sector, ensuring that more organisations can access our services, and we look forward to getting to know many moregroups. As trustees, we are also especially pleased about the success of our volunteering awards, which celebratethe great contribution volunteers make in Barnet. The next year will bring even greater challenges. We will continue to do all we can to provide the supportorganisations and people need to make the most of the available opportunities, and to work closely with ourstakeholders to ensure the provision of the most efficient and effective services possible.Geoff Salmon and Jon ShamahMessage from the Chief ExecutiveThirty years ago, just a few weeks before Margaret Thatcher’s election, a bunch of community organisations inBarnet came together to found BBVSC. The world in 1979 looked very different - the country was reeling from thewinter of discontent with inflation at 10% and record unemployment figures. Thirty years later, BVSC is still busilyadapting to changing and challenging times to ensure that local community groups can carry out the fantasticwork they do.The year 2008/09 saw us do a lot of changing to meet new challenges. We developed a new three-year strategy; aspart of this we reviewed what we offer, carrying out a comprehensive survey of the local third sector, measuring theimpact and quality of our services, gathering feedback on our membership offer and getting insight into what ismost important to our members and all the other groups we work with.As a result, BVSC will close its 30th anniversary year with a new identity, and improved and expanded services,in new areas such as premises. A lot of this review work has taken place with our partners; we contributed to theAudit Commission’s Comprehensive Area Assessment of Barnet and the Future Shape of the Council project, andhave worked with a growing number of council and PCT departments on data gathering to build local insight andcommunity engagement. All of this is coming to fruition as we publish this report on the year 2008/09 and we lookforward to making it all happen during 2009/10.Ruth MulandiBVSC Eyecare Annual International Report3
