H a l f M o o n Henry Hudson and the Voyage that redrew the map of the New World 62 by Douglas Hunter 329 pp • New York: Bloomsbury Press, 2009 • ISBN-13: 978-1-59691-680-7 • $28 • reviewed by Carl G. Schuster If you want to read about Englishman Henry Hudson’s 1609 New World voyage in the Dutch ship, Half Moon (Haelf Maen), this is by far the best iteration, measuring well above myriad other offerings that commemorate the 400th anniversary of the explorer’s jaunt up the Hudson River. Drawing on new primary research materials, Douglas Hunter recounts the voyage and delves into its purported purpose in this colorful and reasoned narrative. Although Hunter cites important sources, he falls short of completing the narrative by extracting from the materials what they say about Hudson, but missing the larger picture: what these say about Hudson’s close ties to the English crown. Hunter mentions the REVIEWS oddness of the Dutch hiring Hudson, but says little of the fact that the navigator actually hijacked the Half Moon, returning it not to Holland as per his contractual orders but to Dartmouth, the English naval station to which privateers delivered their prizes for assay. While Hunter does not state directly that the 1609 venture was a black bag job, this is the inescapable conclusion. Hudson was not a self-employed “explorer/adventurer,” going hat in hand to wealthy merchants looking for sponsorship. Instead, he was part of a well-oiled exercise in the emerging science of geography, sponsored by the court—and the highest levels of English intelligence—and involving the brightest and most enlightened minds of the age. T h e B e t t e r t o E a t y o u W i t h : Fear in the Animal World by Joel Berger 360 pp • Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2008 • ISBN-10: 0226043630, ISBN- 13: 978-0226043630 • $29 More than 125 years ago, Alfred Russell Wallace recognized that we live in “a zoologically impoverished world.” In his book, The Better to Eat You With: Fear in the Animal World, wildlife conservationist Joel Berger examines how this impoverishment came to be and the conservation policies needed to redress it. Berger reminds us that the purpose of conservation is to “hold on to what we have and to build what we have lost.” To do this, he says, we have to “understand animals, their natural history, and the threats to their existence.” Among the examples he gives is that of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone after a 70-year absence. Before the wolves were released, many wondered how the moose, elk, birds, and other animals would react when they first encountered their ancient enemy Would they even remember Berger recounts an experiment that involved playing sounds of unfamiliar animals to gauge reactions. Buffalo hardly reacted to the sounds of an ancient predator, lions. When roars of a more recent predator filled the air, however, fear was evident in the animals’ levels of stress hormones and their rush to protect their own. Berger roamed across North America, Russia, Asia, Patagonia, and the Arctic, seeing a landscape that has changed profoundly in the last century as large animals have disappeared. If we continue to kill an average of 300,000 predators every year, he warns, this will have an adverse effect on the natural world, and ultimately on us.
