QUESTIONNAIRE ADMINISTRATION
UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0 is a self-administered survey. Although it has
not been evaluated for face-to-face and telephone administration, it is
possible to use these interviewer modes of data collection. The
instrument is designed to be used in clinical trials and clinical care.
SCORING GUIDE
Questions for each scale
Reflux: Questions 1-8
Distention/ Bloating: Questions 9-12
Fecal Soilage: Question 13
Diarrhea: Questions 14-15
Social functioning: Questions 16-21
Emotional well-being: Questions 22-30
Constipation: Questions 31-34
The items are scored on a 0 to 3 possible range, where 0 indicates
better health and 3 indicates worse health except for questions 15
and 31, which are scored on 0 (better health) and 1 (worse health)
possible range.

Scale scores represent the average of items in the scale. For
example, for Distention/Bloating scale, the total score is calculated as
follows:
(Score for question 9+ score for question 10+ score for question 11+
score for question 12)/4
In addition to the 7 scale scores (Reflux; Distention/Bloating; Fecal
Soilage; Diarrhea; Constipation; Social functioning; Emotional Well
Being), scores from 6 of 7 scales (excluding constipation scale) can
be combined to form a total “GIT” score. Total GIT score captures
overall burden (severity) of SSc-associated GIT.
Total GIT Score= average (Reflux scale+ Distention/ Bloating
scale+ Diarrhea scale+ Fecal soilage scale+ Emotional wellbeing
scale+ Social functioning scale)
Severity of GIT illness: We included 3 anchors (“In the past 1 week,
how severe were your gastrointestinal (gut, GI) symptoms) overall/
upper/ lower symptoms” with responses ranging from “No gut
symptoms” to “Very severe” symptoms. These were included in our
original published data (1) and data collected in a recent National
Scleroderma Foundation online survey. We present ranges for
patients classified as “None-to-Mild” symptoms, “Moderate”
symptoms, and “Severe-to-Very Severe” symptoms.
