Boosting Malawi’s Export Potential
BizClim is essentially about “promoting reforms in macroeconomic policy and improving legislation,
institutional set up and financial measures (the rules of the game) relating to the enabling
environment of the private sector in ACP countries or regions”
The Embassy of the Republic of Malawi is spearheading a one-day workshop
aimed at familiarizing a delegation of exports with relevant issues, including
funding and export market facilitation. The workshop is set to take place
in Brussels on May 7th, 2012 at Microsoft Executive Briefing Centre. The
delegation will be composed of high-level representatives of national
private sector development institutions and leaders from a wide spectrum of
exporting companies.
The economy of Malawi is predominantly agricultural, with about 90% of
the population living in rural areas. Agriculture accounts for about 37% of
GDP and 85% of export revenues. The government faces strong challenges,
notably to spur exports. The main destination locations for the country’s
exports are presently South Africa, Germany, Egypt, Zimbabwe, the United
States, Russia and the Netherlands.
The country relies heavily on tobacco, tea, sugarcane and coffee, which make
up more than 90% of Malawi’s export revenue. Malawi’s economic reliance
on the export of agricultural commodities renders it particularly vulnerable
to external shocks such as declining terms of trade and drought.
The workshop aims at providing participants with networking opportunities
with importers and agents, but also with suppliers of equipment and
technologies. All participating companies are well established in their
domains and run strong businesses by national and regional standards.
A number of exports operate in traditional export areas, such as tobacco,
coffee, tea, groundnuts, rice, soya, maize, beans and sunflower, pigeon peas.
Other exporters seek to find markets for fish (Wild Cichlids from Lake Malawi,
Mzuzu Honey, Roses and Lisianthus). Agri-processors are also among the
participants, offering tomato ketchup, macadamia nuts, Full Cream Milk,
Peanut Butter). A number of companies produce handicrafts (Contemporary
basket production, wooden beads, Cloth lining, Vegetable hand-tanned
leather shopping baskets, Laundry Baskets, Flower vessels).
In addition to exploring export opportunities, the delegation includes
organizations interested in the promotion of the country as an investment
destination. This is particularly the case of the Malawi Investment & Trade
Centre. The latter is responsible for encouraging, promoting, facilitating local
and foreign investment in Malawi.
