Iowa Diocese To Mark
'Traffic Safety Sunday'
DUBUQUE, la. (NO — Archbishop
Leo Binz of Dubuque
designated "Traffic Safety Sunday"
in an effort "to bring
home to the citizens of our state
the moral responsibility we have
in the matter of traffic- safety."
Acting in cooperation with the
Iowa Office of Public Safety, the
Archbishop sent a special letter
to his priests and people in the
238 parishes of the archdiocese,
asking their participation in the
safety crusade.

of discrimination in education,
a speaker warned here.

dren because they are not
enrolled in state schools,
Frank C. Meyers, past state
deputy of the Knights of Columbus,
said at the Archdiocesan
Holy Name Union's
Communion breakfast.
Exclusion of private education
from Federal aid, Mr.
Meyers said, "means that a
sizeable percentage of the people
of our United States are
classified as an inferior category
of citizens — as secondclass
citizens, and not entitled
to benefits given to children as
a whole."
"Let us never forget that
the Founding Fathers of this
great nation were the products
of private education,
which, before and for years
after the birth of this republic,
was the only system of
education we knew," he continued.

Mr. Meyers pointed out that
15 per cent of \ the total U.S.
school enrollment was in private
schools. Though the parents
of this 15 per cent pay
separately and additionally for
the education of their children,
none is exempt from taxes.
