3.0 The Cycling Experience DAY ONE The journey begins in the picturesque community of Opua (once a port). The end of the railway can still be seen on the wharf. From here you meander your way to the train terminus (to be built) and catch the steam train to Kawakawa, where you can visit the quirky Hundertwasser toilets and enjoy a good cup of coffee. From Kawakawa, you bike through some beautiful rural landscapes, enjoying peaceful vistas and interacting with nature. The area is steeped in history and offers a variety of backdrops, from bustling towns to farm land and native bush. The Kaikohe area will host the overnight stay. There is a range of accommodation and hospitality outlets, including historic B&B’s, Marae and hotels/motels. 8
DAY TWO After enjoying a hearty breakfast, the day begins with a gentle journey from Kaikohe, through a tunnel and alongside Lake Omapere to the historic village of Okaihau. The area is once again steeped in history and there are many wonderful stories to be told about the lake. Travelling down through the stunning Utakura Valley you arrive at Horeke on the west coast. Here you can enjoy the afternoon from the Horeke Tavern balcony with a cold beer, then either catch a lift back to your car or board a boat to the south Hokianga and take the opportunity to view Tane Mahuta. 9
