Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center (SPRTC), located in the foothills of
southern Colorado, is a staff secure, Joint Commission accredited residential
program for males and females ages 10 to 21. SPRTC offers 24 hour care in an
intensive, highly structured treatment environment. At SPRTC we treat behavioral,
mental health, and substance abuse problems, applying accepted best practices
to help our young clients progress through their issues. We incorporate gender
specific educational programming, relapse prevention, anger management,
trauma intervention, and additional professional mental health services to
MALE & FEMALE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TREATMENT PROGRAMS
SPRTC specializes in residential services for adolescents with mental illness, including severe emotional
and/or behavioral problems. The program offers comprehensive services to support the emotional and
mental well being of the adolescents and families it serves.
Programming includes group therapy sessions covering topics such as grief and loss, anger management,
relationships, team building, and social skills. SPRTC has an exceptional mental health staff comprised
of master’s level therapists, Licensed Professionals Counselors and Licensed Clinical Social Workers
that work directly with the youth providing quality treatment. A board certified psychiatrist reviews
residents’ cases on a weekly basis.
Facility staff works to incorporate each resident’s family into the treatment process. This includes
conducting family therapy with flexible scheduling to meet the needs of the family. Additionally, SPRTC
will provide transportation and hotel accommodations for two family members on a quarterly basis for
out-of-state residents.
SPRTC recognizes the value of gender specific programming and is committed to providing quality
services with diverse populations. Research shows that girls and boys respond to experiences differently,
have different pathways to problem behaviors and often face different issues and challenges. Gender
specific programming goes beyond simply focusing on girls. It takes into account the developmental
needs of girls during adolescence, a critical stage for gender identity formation. It nurtures and
reinforces "femaleness" as a positive identity with inherent strengths.
Services address the needs of a gender group (female or male) in ways that are responsive to those
differences. Given the importance that girls place on relationships, gender specific programming
teaches positive relationship building skills. SPRTC gender specific programming provides girls with
decision making and life skills that will assist their development into womanhood. Gender specific
programming also
recognizes the dangers
and risks that girls face
because of gender.
Empowerment teaches
girls to use their
voice, to speak for
themselves, and to
recognize that they
have choices.

SEXUAL MISCONDUCT TREATMENT PROGRAMS n
Insight Program for Boys & RENEW Program for Girls
SPRTC designed the Insight and RENEW programs in accordance with the standards and guidelines
promulgated by the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) for the treatment and
supervision of juveniles with histories of sexual misconduct including, but not limited to, adjudicated
sexual offenses. The Insight and RENEW programs are comprised of teams of master’s level
therapists including Licensed Professional Counselors and a Marriage and Family Therapist.
In order for therapists to receive referrals and treat offense specific clients in the State of Colorado,
it is recommended that each therapist be listed as a full operating level provider with the SOMB.
The Insight and RENEW curriculums are diverse and customized to meet every client’s level of
comprehension. The programs utilize curriculums by the Change Companies, Timothy J. Kahn, Robert
E. Longo, Tom Leversee, and Margaret Charlton. The Insight and RENEW programs and their best
practices are supported by the most current research in the field to date. Each program begins with a
strong assessment component that includes a psychosexual evaluation. This evaluation will be
utilized to assess, type, and treat the sexually abusive youth according to best practices. Once a
youth has been properly assessed, he or she will journey through a seven-stage treatment program
that includes rapport building, victim disclosures, sexual histories, sexual history polygraph (per
request), clarification, relapse prevention, and termination. These stages also emphasize family
therapy, phase advancement, safety planning, and informed supervision.
In addition to a state of the art treatment program, staff ratios of one staff to four youth during waking
hours provide intensive supervision while minimizing community risk. All residents in the Insight and
RENEW programs are housed in single rooms.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Youth coming into SPRTC enter into one of four treatment tracks to include:
Male Behavioral Health, Female Behavioral Health, Sexual Misconduct Treatment for Boys, and
Sexual Misconduct Treatment for Girls. In conjunction with the services provided in their primary
treatment track, they may also access any or all of the below additional services.
n Substance Abuse Treatment
SPRTC offers a special track of clinical care which addresses the unique challenges faced by
adolescents who are dually diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder as well as substance abuse. In
addition to the clinical services offered within the residential program, these dually diagnosed youth
receive individual and group treatment with a certified addictions counselor.
n Medicine Bear Native American Youth Program
SPRTC is committed to the development and
implementation of culturally competent programs to
serve all Native American youth. This specialized
programming provides the youth with the opportunity
to incorporate treatment approaches into traditional
lifestyles while encouraging strong cultural identity.
Services provided are holistic and identify the need
for spiritual growth and healing in efforts to prevent
recidivism and/or relapse.
n The Haven Program for Exploited Youth
The Haven Program is specifically designed to provide treatment to clients who have been sexually
exploited. The goal of the program is for youth to increase their self-esteem, learn valuable life skills and
to break the trauma bond so they can return to society and be successful. Treatment services are
provided in a safe, staff secure, and highly structured residential environment. Youth admitted to the
Haven Program are integrated in our regular programming and receive the specialized Haven services
through clinical groups and individual sessions.
n PATh 30 Day Assessment Program
The purpose of the Preliminary Assessment and Therapeutic (PATh) Program is to assess clients’ treatment
needs in a structured setting in a 30 day period of time. Clients who are accepted into the PATh Program
will go through the Intake Process similar to our other clients. They will stay with the same therapist
throughout the entire 30 day process; receive more intensive 1:1 therapy, family therapy, Drug and
Alcohol Assessments, Educational Assessments and groups. These clients will also attend school at
SPRTC during this time period. At the end of the 30 day assessment period, a Treatment Recommendation
Report will be sent with our professional opinions for further treatment to the placing agency.

college or by taking correspondence courses with Colorado State University Pueblo.
And finally, “Pack Leaders” is an additional opportunity provided to youth at SPRTC where students can
work with dogs. Students learn to
care for the dogs and also learn
basic training and commands.
Through Pack Leaders students
also get to experience the value
of animal companionship.
Students are selected for
this program based on
their behaviors and
