grew to be among <strong>the</strong> largest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
In 1918, <strong>the</strong> International Nickel Company<br />
(now Vale) built a nickel ref<strong>in</strong>ery <strong>in</strong> <strong>Port</strong><br />
<strong>Colborne</strong>. This began a series <strong>of</strong> heavy<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustries establish<strong>in</strong>g a presence <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Port</strong> <strong>Colborne</strong>.<br />
In 1918, <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Colborne</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficially became<br />
a town with a population <strong>of</strong> 2,837. In <strong>the</strong><br />
succeed<strong>in</strong>g decades <strong>of</strong> steady growth, <strong>the</strong><br />
Village <strong>of</strong> Humberstone and <strong>the</strong> Town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Port</strong><br />
<strong>Colborne</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued to grow towards one<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r geographically; this resulted with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
amalgamation <strong>in</strong> 1952.<br />
In 1966, <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Colborne</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficially became a city.<br />
As <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial base began to decl<strong>in</strong>e dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> last decades <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20th century, <strong>Port</strong><br />
<strong>Colborne</strong> once aga<strong>in</strong> began to look towards <strong>the</strong><br />
potential <strong>of</strong> tourism and began promot<strong>in</strong>g its<br />
cultural and recreational facilities and <strong>the</strong> lure<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Welland Canal.<br />
Today, <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Colborne</strong> is a small multi-faceted<br />
city, which comb<strong>in</strong>es a large service sector<br />
with its bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>in</strong>dustry, culture, recreation,<br />
and tourism <strong>in</strong>dustries to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its unique<br />
character <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> 21st century.<br />
