Division <strong>of</strong> Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology<br />

Lisa Allen, Division Head<br />

Introduction: The Division <strong>of</strong> Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology (PAG) has six members,<br />

Division head Lisa M. Allen, and staff members Ali Nevin, Nicolette Caccia, Sari Kives, Melanie<br />

Ornstein and Rachel Spitzer. The Division maintains a diverse practice in common conditions and<br />

rare challenges in PAG, with over 2500 ambulatory visits per year, including the adolescent<br />

pregnancy program. The Division continues to attract referrals to its surgical complex anomalies<br />

program from out <strong>of</strong> province and out <strong>of</strong> country.<br />

Highlights: Dr. Ali Nevin joined our Division on June 1, <strong>2010</strong>, having completed fellowships in<br />

Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, and<br />

Gynaecologic Endoscopic Surgery/MIGS, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in <strong>Toronto</strong>.<br />

The Division continued to fulfill its mandate in enhancing the gynaecologic care <strong>of</strong> children and<br />

adolescents through education and research in the <strong>2009</strong>/<strong>2010</strong> academic year. Our fellowship<br />

continues to attract diverse applicants from abroad. In addition to a commitment to education <strong>of</strong><br />

Obstetrics and Gynaecology residents in PAG, the Division attracts residents and students from<br />

other programs in Canada.<br />

The members maintain a strong mandate <strong>of</strong> continuing medical education, with 25 invited<br />

presentations in paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, including meetings <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong><br />

Obstetricians and Gynaecologists <strong>of</strong> Canada, North American Society <strong>of</strong> Pediatric and<br />

Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG), the World Congress on Hypospadius and Disorders <strong>of</strong><br />

Sexual Development, and VI Chilean Congress <strong>of</strong> Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. The<br />

section published 6 new peer-reviewed articles on paediatric and adolescent gynaecology<br />

research, and collaborates on a peer-reviewed grant from the Comprehensive Cancer Center<br />

Adolescent Transition Care Program Competition for, A pilot prospective study <strong>of</strong> measurement<br />

<strong>of</strong> ovarian function in adolescent females receiving cancer therapy (Gupta A (PI), Coinvestigators<br />

Lee-Chong A, Allen L, Kives S, Traubici J).<br />

Our members has a strong provincial, national and international presence; Dr. Kives continues as<br />

Co-Chair <strong>of</strong> CANPAGO, the paediatric gynaecology subspecialty committee <strong>of</strong> the SOGC, with<br />

Dr. Allen and Joley Johnstone RN as members. Dr. Allen was the Program Chair <strong>of</strong> the<br />

NASPAG ACM in Las Vegas, April <strong>2010</strong> and continues as a member <strong>of</strong> the subspecialty<br />

committee <strong>of</strong> APOG. Both Dr. Kives and Allen were elected to the Board <strong>of</strong> NASPAG in April<br />

<strong>2010</strong>. Dr. Nicolette Caccia, assisted by Zarine Tilak, is continuing the effort to supplement our<br />

didactic core teaching with interactive web-based modules based on the Articulate program, with<br />

a grant from the Instructional Technology Courseware Development Fund. Based on the modules<br />

developed, the members <strong>of</strong> the Division, led by Dr. Nicolette Caccia, are working with<br />

CANPAGO to develop a cross-country curriculum <strong>of</strong> modules for use in all <strong>University</strong> Obstetrics<br />

and Gynaecology programs, funded by the Sheila Cohen Endowment for Women’s Health, North<br />

York General Hospital Foundation.<br />
