8vice presidents’ reports IPEM Annual review 2012 External IPEM has continued to improve its visibility with opinion formers, the media and the general public. There have been three main themes to IPEM’s external activities: outreach to promote medical physics, support of organisations improving communication of science to the public, and involvement with groups to improve access to opinion formers. Dr Chris Gibson and Dr Kanta Chhokra (AMPI President) IPEM-India Link In November Dr Chris Gibson, former IPEM president, presented an invited talk at the 32nd annual conference of the Association of Medical Physicists of India (AMPI) in Vellore, India. The purpose was to evaluate ways in which IPEM and AMPI might work together to support the development and wider dissemination of scientific services. Potential areas for collaboration included web access to scientific meetings, shared electronic access to reports and publications, overseas members of SIGs, and potential travel fellowships. IRPA The 13th International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) Congress will be held in Glasgow from 13th to 18th May 2012 (www.irpa13glasgow.com). The theme is ‘Living with Radiation, Engaging with Society’. Over 1,150 abstracts have been received. The Society of Radiation Protection (SRP) is the principal organiser but IPEM is a partner organisation. On 5th September 2011 an IRPA radiation protection culture ‘work stream’ workshop took place with SRP and interested parties from the medical and nuclear industry. Thanks to Professor Peter Sharp, Dr Slavik Tabakov, Dr David Simpson, Dr Navneet Dulai and Dr Tracy Soanes for their contributions to this report. Dr A Manivannan Vice President, International Outreach activities have been split between co-operation with other organisations such as the Institute of Physics (IOP), and attendance at national events such as The Big Bang Fair. In particular, IPEM supported the 2011 IOP schools lecture: ‘The Science of Seeing Inside the Body’ by Michael Wilson of The University of Birmingham. The lecture was delivered at a number of schools around the country and also resulted in a free DVD resource for science teachers: (www.iop. org/resources/videos/education/schools-andcolleges-lecture/page_52977.html ). The Institute continues to support the Smallpeice Trust (www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk/) by funding a course on Biomedical Engineering giving year 11 & 12 school students insight into how engineering plays a part in the rehabilitation process after surgery or injury. Support for members’ outreach activities in schools, hospitals and universities continues to be provided by Eva McClean, Communications and Development Manager, through providing careers leaflets and posters, presentations, and other materials. In 2011 IPEM supported over 35 outreach events and sent out over 2000 copies of careers leaflets and other literature. Eva also manages a national database of volunteers who share their enthusiasm for medical physics and provide hands-on experience of radiation protection, ultrasound and other interactive activities. She also works with IPEM’s Academic Ambassadors to deliver presentations to undergraduate physics students at universities throughout the UK. IPEM has maintained close links with Sense About Science, a small charity which seeks to achieve greater public understanding of evidence-based science (www.senseaboutscience.org/). We have supported the re-print of the publication Making Sense of Radiation and we continue to sponsor the Voice of Young Science (VoYS) network that encourages participation by early-career researchers in public debates about science
IPEM Annual review 2012 9 Andrew Miller MP, Dr Stephen Keevil, Professor Nick Stone, Dr Carl Rowbottom and Dr Chris Gibson at Portcullis House, London and runs workshops aimed at helping scientists understand and work more effectively with the media. Through Lisa Parker-Gomm, External Relations Manager at IPEM, closer collaboration has been achieved with the Science Media Centre (SMC), an organisation that promotes the views of authoritative scientific experts to the national news media, particularly when controversial issues are in the headlines (www.sciencemediacentre. org/pages/). SMC links with IPEM via our list of volunteer media spokespersons. This resource has been used to great effect when comments were required on the safety of body scanners at EU airports, and possible risks linked to the use of mobile phones. IPEM experts were also interviewed for national print and broadcast media (notably Professor Malcolm Sperrin in connection with radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power plant). IPEM also remains a member of the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE), an organisation that aims to improve the scientific health of the nation (http://sciencecampaign.org.uk/). IPEM is an institutional member of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee (PSC), which brings together members of both Houses of Parliament with representatives of scientific bodies. In February IPEM sponsored a meeting entitled: ‘Medical Physics: From Blue Skies to Bedside: turning today’s cutting-edge science into tomorrow’s healthcare technology’. This provided the opportunity to highlight the link between investment in basic science and subsequent healthcare-related spin-offs as well as establishing links with parliament. IPEM members Dr Stephen Keevil, Professor Nick Stone and Dr Carl Rowbottom all gave presentations to the PSC meeting. Associated articles by the speakers, with an additional one by Dr Andy Simmons, were published in the journal Science in Parliament. The Institute is keen to extend its parliamentary links in 2012.
