Relations Manager at IPEM, closer collaboration<br />

has been achieved with the Science Media Centre<br />

(SMC), an organisation that promotes the views <strong>of</strong><br />

authoritative scientific experts to the national news<br />

media, particularly when controversial issues<br />

are <strong>in</strong> the headl<strong>in</strong>es (www.sciencemediacentre.<br />

org/pages/). SMC l<strong>in</strong>ks with IPEM via our list <strong>of</strong><br />

volunteer media spokespersons. This resource<br />

has been used to great effect when comments<br />

were required on the safety <strong>of</strong> body scanners<br />

at EU airports, <strong>and</strong> possible risks l<strong>in</strong>ked to the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> mobile phones. IPEM experts were also<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewed for national pr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong> broadcast<br />

media (notably Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Malcolm Sperr<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

connection with radiation from the Fukushima<br />

nuclear power plant). IPEM also rema<strong>in</strong>s a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Campaign for Science <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g</strong> (CaSE), an organisation that aims to<br />

improve the scientific health <strong>of</strong> the nation<br />

(http://sciencecampaign.org.uk/).<br />

IPEM is an <strong>in</strong>stitutional member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Parliamentary <strong>and</strong> Scientific Committee (PSC),<br />

which br<strong>in</strong>gs together members <strong>of</strong> both Houses<br />

<strong>of</strong> Parliament with representatives <strong>of</strong> scientific<br />

bodies. In February IPEM sponsored a meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

entitled: ‘Medical <strong>Physics</strong>: From Blue Skies to<br />

Bedside: turn<strong>in</strong>g today’s cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge science <strong>in</strong>to<br />

tomorrow’s healthcare technology’. This provided<br />

the opportunity to highlight the l<strong>in</strong>k between<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> basic science <strong>and</strong> subsequent<br />

healthcare-related sp<strong>in</strong>-<strong>of</strong>fs as well as<br />

establish<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>ks with parliament. IPEM members<br />

Dr Stephen Keevil, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Nick Stone <strong>and</strong> Dr<br />

Carl Rowbottom all gave presentations to the PSC<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g. Associated articles by the speakers,<br />

with an additional one by Dr Andy Simmons, were<br />

published <strong>in</strong> the journal Science <strong>in</strong> Parliament. The<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> is keen to extend its parliamentary l<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />
