28 IPEM Annual review 2012 advisory groups Engineering Advisory Group EAG leads the professional engineering activities of IPEM, dealing with and promoting registration but also actively contributing to the promotion of engineering applied to medicine and biology in healthcare, academia and industry. It provides the main link between the Institute and the Engineering Council. It reports to IPEM Council and continues to provide the processes necessary for formal engineering registration with the Engineering Council. EAG promotes the concept that progression through the categories of registration from EngTech to IEng to CEng should be possible and encouraged subject to the UK-SPEC requirements for each category. This has resonances with possible progress through the streams in the Modernising Scientific Careers process within the NHS. EAG is encouraging this progression where appropriate and is exploring the possibility of linking completion of the clinical technologist training scheme in an engineering stream with coincident award of EngTech. Working collaboratively with other Institute bodies, EAG engages in the process of training, and accreditation of courses and centres. EAG actively engages with the Academic Development Group (AAG), IPEM academic ambassadors, and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) Panel for Biomedical Engineering, for the promotion of the professions and the Institute within UK Schools, Colleges and Universities. Professor P Kyriacou Chair, Engineering Advisory Group Regional Advisory Group This group consists of the Regional Chairs who have been elected by members to gather individual members’ views and opinions for presentation to IPEM committees. Whilst much of the communication is conducted electronically, a meeting is held once a year with the main priority of discussing issues raised by individual members. At the 2011 meeting, additional topics on the agenda included how the Regional Chairs could communicate IPEM’s position on Modernising Scientific Careers and what the marketing strategy initiative had shown about the IPEM membership demographic. We were also given a quick tour of the new IPEM website, provoking discussion about how this could be used to improve communication. Away from the meeting, Regional Chairs continue to take an active role in supporting their members by providing information, asking questions on their behalf and organising regional meetings. Dr J Barraclough Chair, Regional Advisory Group Innovation and Research Advisory Group The IRAG was reinstated in November 2011 with the purpose of advising and informing IPEM Council on issues relating to innovation and research in healthcare, and promoting IPEM’s expertise in innovation and research to its members and external stakeholders. Founder members have already been identified and an invitation for new members will go out in 2012. Although the group has not yet met it has secured £50k from IPEM to provide small awards to help address the difficulty in funding for earlystage or niche studies. A first call for applications will be issued in spring 2012 and a second call if required in the autumn. A key development has been the Department of Health’s report: Innovation, Health and Wealth: accelerating adoption and diffusion in the NHS. IRAG is preparing a report on this and its potential implications for medical physics and engineering. Dr D Brettle Chair, Innovation and Research Advisory Group
IPEM Annual review 2012 29 Trainees Advisory Group This group consists of the Associate Physicists and Engineers Network Panel (APEN) and the Associate Technologists Network Panel (ATeN). Both APEN and ATeN meet three times a year to discuss common issues and areas of collaboration, as well as issues and projects specific to each group. Members of the APEN and ATeN panel continue to sit on a number of IPEM committees to provide a voice for associate physicists, engineers and technologists within IPEM. Miss S Higgins Chair, Trainees Advisory Group Associate Physicists and Engineers Network Panel (APEN) This has been a very interesting year as we now represent trainees on the new Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) scheme, as well as continuing to support trainees on the Part 1 and Part 2 training schemes. One of the highlights of the year was organising 6 successful trainee sessions at EMPEC. These allowed over 35 trainees to present their work to a European audience. In addition we continue to organise our other trainee events, including the Part 2 Induction Day, Communication Skills Workshops and the first Trainee Induction Day to accommodate both MSC and Part 1 trainees. The APEN panel meets 3 times a year to discuss issues relevant to trainees, and we feed back information via the fortnightly IPEM newsletter. We are always keen to hear from trainees, and you can contact us on: apen@ipem.ac.uk Associate Technologists Network Panel (ATeN) This is a small panel, working hard to maintain links between technologists at all stages of their training. We have continued our representation on the CTETP panel, working closely to improve the overall awareness of ATeN. We also attended EMPEC to distribute information and make contacts. Our continuing objective is to maintain and raise the profile of ATeN among trainees, and to recruit new panel members. In 2012 ATeN will endeavour to support trainee technologists by attending organised events, collaborating where appropriate with APEN, and maintaining a direct link to current trainees and their supervisors, through IPEM via email and bi-monthly newsletters.
