and this is in keeping with later<br />
Rabbinical exclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine Femi<br />
nine. But in <strong>the</strong> circles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mystics<br />
<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit was regarded as feminine,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Spouse <strong>of</strong> Divinity, and in <strong>the</strong> Wisdomliterature<br />
Wisdom herself.<br />
As in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r great traditions, so<br />
also in pre-Christian Jewish Gnostic circles,<br />
<strong>the</strong> natural Trinity was a fundamental<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir symbolism, and so also<br />
a system <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christianized Gnosis.<br />

<strong>The</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dual Sonship, how<br />
ever, must, in one direction at any rate,<br />
be sought for along that very obscure<br />
line <strong>of</strong> descent that is called Ophite<br />
(Naassene), and which has its roots in<br />
<strong>the</strong> pre-Christian Gnosis and <strong>the</strong> wide<br />
spread Myth <strong>of</strong> Man (see H. i.<br />
139-198).<br />
