Now<br />

was a technical term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gnosis, as<br />

N QF<br />

may be seen from a fine Naassene <strong>Hymn</strong>, THE RQBE<br />

two lines <strong>of</strong> which, referring to <strong>the</strong> soul, OF GLORY,<br />

run as follows :<br />

is born, with no way out for her ;<br />

in misery<br />

She enters in her wandering <strong>the</strong><br />

Labyrinth <strong>of</strong> ills.&quot; (H. i. 191).<br />

Whatever <strong>the</strong> precise situation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise unknown Sarbug may have<br />

been, it must be very patent to <strong>the</strong><br />

Mystic that <strong>the</strong> Gnostic poet intended<br />

it for a certain stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> descent <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> soul, or spiritual mind, into <strong>the</strong><br />

regions <strong>of</strong> manifestation.<br />

H<strong>of</strong>fmann (pp. 289 ff.) has attempted<br />

an interpretation on <strong>the</strong>se lines. <strong>The</strong><br />

Way <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, he says, leads from (i)<br />

Heaven as <strong>the</strong> God-realm, through (2)<br />

<strong>the</strong> Firmament, to (3) <strong>the</strong> Earth<br />

corresponding with <strong>the</strong> three natures <strong>of</strong><br />

man :<br />

spirit, soul, and body.<br />
