Instructions to Registration <strong>of</strong> Courses (PHY) Semester 1 AY 2012/2013<br />

1. You are advised to read the instructions to courses registration posted in STARS. Please refer to STARS<br />

for the schedule <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />

2. For all programmes <strong>and</strong> study years from admission year 2010 <strong>and</strong> before, the normal load is 18 AU<br />

<strong>and</strong> the maximum load is 24 AU. For admission year 2011 onwards, the normal load is 17 AU <strong>and</strong> the<br />

maximum load is 20 AU. When you are registering a course that will exceed your normal load, you can<br />

only do so after 5pm on your course registration day. If you wish to read a course that will exceed your<br />

maximum load, you can obtain the overload form (blue form) from SPMS General Office. You should<br />

submit the overload application after the result <strong>of</strong> GER-PE <strong>and</strong> UE allocation is known. Please note that<br />

approval is granted to a specific course that you wish to overload.<br />

3. The following courses are to be read during Semester 1 AY 2012/2013 (subject to pre-requisites).<br />

Students with Admission Year 2012 will have their core courses allocated during the online<br />

matriculation.<br />

6. Students with Admission Year 2010 <strong>and</strong> before must clear MPS812 by this semester.<br />

7. Students with Admission Year 2010 <strong>and</strong> earlier who have not completed MTH110 should register for<br />

MH1400 - Algorithms <strong>and</strong> Computing I <strong>and</strong> MH1401 - Algorithms <strong>and</strong> Computing II.<br />

8. Students who will be taking PAP319 in AY2012/2013 Semester 1 are to email their preferred groups to<br />

Ms Lim See Har – MSHLim@ntu.edu.sg with their name, study year <strong>and</strong> matriculation number before<br />

the add/drop period starts.<br />

9. Students with Admission Year 2012 who are not allocated with Core Courses after they matriculate<br />

online may write in to SPMSUndgrad@ntu.edu.sg<br />

10. Students with Admission Year 2012 who are intending to take up higher level courses whereby the<br />

pre-requisites are fulfilled through exemptions are to write in to SPMSUndgrad@ntu.edu.sg.<br />

Exemptions will only be updated after the add/drop period <strong>and</strong> will only be reflected at the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

semester, together with semester results release.<br />

11. Students who are interested may take graduate courses as prescribed electives or unrestricted<br />

electives. A minimum CGPA <strong>of</strong> 4.00 is required for the application. Students will be required to<br />

fulfill at least 10 AU <strong>of</strong> level 4 [excluding PAP491 Final Year project (10 AU) or PAP493 Industrial<br />

Internship II (10 AU)] <strong>and</strong> above courses as part <strong>of</strong> their graduation requirement under Major PE.<br />

obtainable from http://www.spms.ntu.edu.sg/PAP/Default.html . These are the graduate courses<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered in AY2012/2013 Semester 1:<br />

PAP710: Concepts in Statistical Mechanics.<br />

PAP711: Graduate Solid State <strong>Physics</strong><br />

PAP731:Optical Spectroscopic Techniques<br />

Please note that PAP711 is mutually exclusive with PAP442; PAP710 is mutually exclusive with<br />

PAP451. This application is subject to approval.<br />

12. Students who have taken courses as pre-requisites during exchange programme in the current<br />

semester, please write in to SPMSundgrad@ntu.edu.sg with your course mapping approval, screenshot<br />

<strong>of</strong> registered courses in the overseas university <strong>and</strong> results slip/transcript (if available).<br />

13. Students who have completed all the UE requirement <strong>and</strong> wish to read more electives may obtain an<br />

appeal form (pink form) from SPMS General Office. You should submit the overload application after<br />

the result <strong>of</strong> GER-PE <strong>and</strong> UE allocation is known, unless your UE in balance is currently 0. Please note<br />

that approval is granted to a specific course that you wish to overload.<br />

14. Students who are currently completing or have completed the minor in Entrepreneurship are not<br />

allowed to take up MPS812. They are to replace MPS812 with another course from the Human<br />

Resource Management topic. Such students will have to inform the <strong>School</strong> once they have registered<br />

the replacement course.<br />

15. Students who are taking up the minor in Entrepreneurship courses are advised to plan their load<br />

carefully as the minor courses will be registered at a later stage <strong>and</strong> may cause undue overloading.<br />

There is no guarantee that the overload will be approved <strong>and</strong> the student could continue with the<br />

minor when such case arises.<br />

<strong>and</strong> will be replied as soon as possible, depending on the nature <strong>of</strong> the request. Appeals for GER-PE <strong>and</strong><br />

UE vacancies are to be submitted through the online appeal system <strong>and</strong> will not be responded to if<br />

submitted otherwise.<br />
