These short courses are aimed at personnel working in the<br />

civil construction industry as para-professionals who support<br />

professional engineers. On completion, participants will be able<br />

to demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical,<br />

managerial, coordination <strong>and</strong> planning skills..<br />

These short courses are designed to<br />

provide professional development <strong>and</strong><br />

underpinning knowledge that could<br />

contribute to the attainment of the<br />

Diploma of <strong>Civil</strong> <strong>Construction</strong> <strong>Design</strong>.<br />

A Diploma of Project Management can<br />

also be achieved by doing the project<br />

management units of competency.<br />

Course Descriptors<br />

1) Introduction to soils fundamentals<br />

This course will provide participants with<br />

fundamental underpinning knowledge relating to<br />

soils. It will enable the making of informed choices<br />

regarding equipment selection <strong>and</strong> construction<br />

techniques relating to earth works on civil works.<br />

Topics include:<br />

• soil classification<br />

• particle size distribution<br />

• Atterburg limits<br />

• compaction<br />

• optimum moisture content / max dry density<br />

• field density<br />

• earth moving/compaction equipment<br />

• haulage calculations<br />

Duration 2 days, Cost $760+GST<br />

2) Introduction to drafting<br />

This course is designed to give participants an<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing of Australian St<strong>and</strong>ard 1100 in<br />

relation to requirements for the production <strong>and</strong>/<br />

or reading of civil engineering related drawings.<br />

Topics include:<br />

• Use of CAD equipment to construct basic<br />

elements<br />

• Printing text <strong>and</strong> line work appropriate to civil<br />

engineering drawings<br />

• Orthographic projection<br />

• Sectional views<br />

• Dimensioning<br />

• Drawing layout<br />

Duration 2 days, Cost $760+GST<br />

3) Project management (Dip)<br />

This course is made of 6 units from the Diploma<br />

of Project Management <strong>and</strong> provides participants<br />

with skills <strong>and</strong> knowledge to manage some of the<br />

most critical elements of a construction project<br />

such as time, quality, risk, procurement, scope<br />

<strong>and</strong> communication.<br />

The project management skillset is part of the<br />

nationally recognised BSB51407 Diploma of<br />

Project Management. Participants will be asked to<br />

complete a work based project.<br />

Duration 4 days, Cost $1800 - GST free<br />

4) Underst<strong>and</strong>ing mechanical properties<br />

of materials<br />

This course provides participants with<br />

fundamental underpinning knowledge relating<br />

to the use of steel on civil construction projects.<br />

It will enable the making of informed choices<br />

regarding selection of appropriate steel grades<br />

<strong>and</strong> corrosion protection. Topics include:<br />

• Stress <strong>and</strong> strain<br />

• Mild steel tension test<br />

• Corrosion treatments<br />

• Impact tests<br />

• Hardness tests<br />

• Shear testing<br />

Duration 2 days, Cost $760+GST<br />

5) Best practice concrete placement<br />

This course provides participants with<br />

fundamental underpinning knowledge relating to<br />

the ordering, transportation, placing <strong>and</strong> curing of<br />

concrete. Topics include:<br />

• Constituents of concrete <strong>and</strong> their properties<br />

• Types of cement<br />

• Properties in the plastic state<br />

• Properties in the solid state<br />

• Placing techniques/precautions<br />

• Curing<br />

• Slump <strong>and</strong> strength testing<br />

• Reinforcement positioning<br />

6) Working with teams, quality <strong>and</strong><br />

continuous improvement<br />

This unit aims to provide participants with the<br />

skills to ensure team effectiveness, manage<br />

personal work priorities <strong>and</strong> professional<br />

development, manage quality customer<br />

service, manage an information or knowledge<br />

management system <strong>and</strong> manage innovation <strong>and</strong><br />

continuous improvement.<br />

7) Steel <strong>and</strong> concrete drawing<br />

This unit will provide participants with the<br />

underpinning knowledge required to produce<br />

drawings which document basic steel <strong>and</strong><br />

concrete structures commonly used on civil<br />

construction projects. This will include:<br />

• structural notes<br />

• general layout concrete drawings<br />

• concrete slabs<br />

• concrete beams<br />

• concrete columns<br />

• concrete footings<br />

• concrete walls<br />

• concrete stairs<br />

• general layout steel drawings<br />

• holding down bolt plans<br />

• steel line drawings<br />

• steel detailing<br />

8) Fundamentals of Structural <strong>Design</strong><br />

This course provides participants with an<br />

awareness of the structural design process thus<br />

enabling them to constructively contribute to<br />

solving structural problems that arise on a civil<br />

engineering project. Topics include:-<br />

• Forces, movements, free body diagrams,<br />

equilibrium<br />

• Load determination<br />

• Structural systems<br />

• Truss analysis<br />

• <strong>Design</strong> of a tension member<br />

• <strong>Design</strong> of a bolted lap joint<br />

Duration 2 days, Cost $760+GST<br />

9) Geotechnical Fundamentals (4 days)<br />

This course will provide participants with an<br />

awareness of the structural design of a variety of<br />

foundations including shallow foundations, pad<br />

footings, rafts <strong>and</strong> piles for settlements <strong>and</strong> load<br />

carrying capacity. Topics include:<br />

• Determination of soil strength parameters<br />

• California Bearing Capacity test.<br />

• Pressures on retaining walls<br />

• Bearing capacity of foundations<br />

• Pad, strip raft <strong>and</strong> pile footings<br />

• Slope stability<br />

Duration 4 days, Cost $1520+GST<br />

All course materials, lunch, refreshments <strong>and</strong><br />

a certificate of participation are included in the<br />

cost of each course.<br />

To obtain a Diploma of <strong>Civil</strong><br />

<strong>Construction</strong> <strong>Design</strong><br />

To receive this qualification, participants must<br />

successfully complete 20 units of competency<br />

(UOC). Rules governing the selection of UOC<br />

are included in the documentation available on<br />

training.gov.au.<br />

UOCs numbered 1 to 21 in the table below satisfy<br />

the selection rules. Note UOCs MEM 30001A<br />

<strong>and</strong> MEM 30002A have prerequisite UOCs which<br />

are not counted as part the 20 required. These<br />

prerequisites are MEM16006A Organise <strong>and</strong><br />

Communicate Information <strong>and</strong> MEM16008A<br />

Interact with Computer Technology.<br />

Below is a list of nine short courses which<br />

address the knowledge component of specific<br />

units of competency. The applicable UOCs are<br />

listed alongside the appropriate course. Further<br />

on the job assessment will be required to obtain<br />

credit for an individual UOC.<br />

Successful completion of courses 1, 2, 4, 5, 7,<br />

8 <strong>and</strong> 9 can be used as part evidence toward<br />

the attainment of the associated units of<br />

To obtain a Diploma of Project<br />

Management<br />

The project management skillset (courses 3<br />

<strong>and</strong> 6) is part of the nationally recognised<br />

BSB51407 Diploma of Project Management.<br />

Participants will be asked to complete a work<br />

based project. Successful completion will result<br />

in the attainment of 9 units of competency <strong>and</strong><br />

the Diploma of Project Management.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

There are no prerequisites however ideally c<strong>and</strong>idates for these courses should have a<br />

minimum of 12 months on-the-job experience related to construction either on-site or in<br />

an engineering design office.<br />
