NEW JERSEY EXPRESS COMPANY<br />

The only reference I have seen to the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> Express Company was in<br />

NJPH, number 10, November 1974. The examples shown here are both in dark<br />

blue on orange envelopes, two different designs and two different sizes.<br />

The corner indicia *re embossed after the envelope was manufactures as the<br />

embossing shows on the reverse.<br />

Mention should be made of Robson Lowe's article 'The United States Eastern<br />

Express Companies," in The Philatelist, Vo. 45, no. 6, January 1979, where<br />

the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> Express Company is mentioned and one of the indicium is illustrated.<br />

Assistant Postmaster General, Washington, D. 4J., and the annexed receipt returned to him. In no ease<br />

to the Agency at <strong>New</strong> York.<br />

WY- POSTMASTERS ARE EXPECTED in each case, to order what, upon a careful estimate,<br />

may be deemed a sufficient supply of the various kinds of stainps for three months; and<br />

they are required in every instance, to use the form of order which will be furnished by the<br />

Department., which must be signed by the Postmaster himself, unless he be necessarily absent or sick,<br />

when it may be signed by the Assistant or Deputy, he placing the Postmaster's name above his own.<br />

Postmasters will retain the above instructions for reference, and return the lower receipt to the<br />

The registered stamp bill and the Postage Stamp Agency motice were both<br />

found inside the large Agency envelope.<br />

If the stamps in the original envelope were the 1869 issue, rather than<br />

the banknotes, they would be worth about a quarter million dollars today!<br />

EAST ORANGE<br />

Several sharp-eyed members picked up the reason that there wasn't an<br />

East Orange before there was an East Orange (see last issue) was because<br />

the cover illustrated originated in East Orange, Vermont, not <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong>.<br />

Docketing on the reverse acknowledges receipt at Stockholm NJ on August 19,<br />

1873 of 100 20 stamps, 1200 30 stamps, 200 60 stamps. The cover being<br />

slightly reduced at top so that the thousand digit for the 30 stamps has<br />

been cut away. Usage of the Official Seal (Scott # OX1) to seal the flap<br />

is proper for this period, and is the intended use of this seal.<br />

Railroad as the avenue of transportation to service the post office at<br />

Stockholm in Sussex County. The manuscript number'28,3<strong>67</strong>' being the<br />

registry number.<br />

MORE ON OCEANFRONT FANCIES<br />

In the January 1986 NJPH on page 13, there were illustrated two covers under<br />

the above heading. Since there was no copy identifying them, this article<br />

will give a little information on them.<br />

Until these two items turned up, the writer had not known of any handstamped<br />

hotel markings from <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> hotels, such as are listed for various cities<br />

in the 1973 edition of the American Stampless Cover Catalog, on pages 243-44.<br />

The post office at Ocean Beach, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> was of short duration, having been<br />

established June 22, 1874 and changed to Belmar, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> July 16, 1889.<br />

During that time, the Hotel Columbia used the red octagonal strike on the<br />

reverse of its outgoing mail. At the post office, this cover received the<br />

30mm strike with the shaded star, both in black<br />

The second cover has a purple double circle from Spring Lake, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong>.<br />

Close examination shows an additional 22mm circle marking, also purple,<br />

and reading BEACH HOUSE/SEA GIRT, N ,.J. with a star in the circle. Based<br />

upon the spacing of a second strike to the right and barely visible, it<br />

appears as if the striking device had both markings firmly affixed to it<br />

since the distance between the two circles is constant.<br />

Note that one of the two hotels in the corner card is the BEACH HOUSE, SEA<br />

GIRT, N.J. while the other two hotels shown are in Spring Lake. Sea Girt<br />

did not have an established post office until 1899, at which time it was<br />

spelled as one word, Seagirt. Spring Lake and Sea Girt are about four miles<br />

apart. The Seagirt post office also had a short existence from 1877 to<br />

1882, when it was changed to Spring Lake Beach.<br />

This letter was addressed to Paris where it received the Paris marking for<br />

incoming mail and the Drexel, Harjes & Co strike in blue.<br />

The BEACH HOUSE strike is definitely a hotel marking, not a post office one.<br />

This these two covers record the first two hotel markings noted for <strong>New</strong><br />

Jersy. If collectors will check their old covers of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong>, they may<br />

discover others with these desirable strikes. They may not be particularly<br />

valuable, but certainly are of interest.<br />

Resbonce to the preliminery listing that appeared in the last issue<br />

of the Journal has been very encouraging. Corrections and additional<br />

data including illustrations have recently been received for 33 of the<br />

listings; along with 13.entirely new listings including illustrations<br />

and data, including two previously- unrecorded towns: Morristown and_<br />

<strong>Jersey</strong> City. If you have any #1 • or #2 covers with <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> postmarks<br />

or know of someone who does, or see any either on exhibit or available<br />

for sale anywhere, please notify the project co-ordinator along with<br />

as much data as possible, including Xeroks of the covers if available<br />

or auction' catalog cut-outs, etc. We appear to te making excellent<br />

progress on this project, and now strenuiously appeal to all members<br />

letter rate, and is the finest example of a Private-Perf on cover.<br />

The ATLANTIC CITY 50 ROSE ERROR represents a double error as the value<br />

of the stamp was not noticed when removed from the surrounding sheet of 2O<br />

stamps, and was therefore used as a 20 domestic postage rate.<br />

The enclosed piece of mail, addressed to you, was found in a<br />

mail bag when it was opened to be reused after being in storage.<br />

Empty mailbags are placed into temporary storage for various<br />

periods of time until needed and the discovery of your mail<br />

happened when the bag was reissued to our post office for<br />

regular use.<br />

We continually stress to our employees the importance of double<br />

checking mailbags after being emptied to insure that no envelopes<br />

or parcels remain in the bags. Unfortunately this apparently was<br />

not done as your piece of mail was overlooked when the bag was<br />

emptied.<br />

Fourth-class Matter Embraces that knon -u as domestic parcel post mail, and includes merchandise, farm and factory<br />

products, seeds, cuttings, bulbs, roots, scions, and plants, books (including catalogs), miscellaneous printed matter weighing<br />

more than 4 pounds, and all other mailable matter not embraced in the first, second, and third classes.<br />

Extent and Usefulness of Parcel Post.-The domestic parcel post offers a convenient, Tack, and efficient means of<br />

transporting mailable parcels to any post office in the United States or its possessions. The service reaches more places than any<br />

other transportation agency. It brings producers and consumers into closer contact, thus opening the way to reducing the high<br />

cost of living. Special treatment and advantages are accorded to shipments of farm products. Low poetage rates, based on the<br />

service rendered, are provided. The rates to near-by zones are particularly advantageous. Parcels may ho insured against<br />

lees and may be sent C. 0. D., and as special-delivery matter.<br />

Rates of Postage on Fourth-Class or Parcel Post Matter-To be Fully Prepald-Unsealed-aro as follows:<br />

(a) Parcels weighing 4 ounces or less, except books, seeds, plants, etc., 1 cent for each ounce or fraction thereof, any distance.<br />

(6) Parcels weighing 8 ounces or less containing books, seeds, cuttings, bulbs, roots, scions, and plants, 1 cent for each 2 ounces<br />

or fraction thereof, regardless of distance-- . „. _ •<br />

(c) Parcels weighing more than 8 ounces containing books, seeds, plants, etc., parcels of miscellaneous printed matter weighing<br />

more than 4 pounds, and all other parcels of fourth-class matter weighing more than 4 ounces are chargeable, according to distance<br />

or zone, at the pound rates shown in the following table (except as provided in paragraph (d) below), a fraction of a pound being<br />

computed as a full pound:<br />

Zones-<strong>Postal</strong> Guide and Keys.-For parcel post purposes the United States is divided into units of area 30 minutia; square,<br />

which form the basis of eight postal zones. The unit numbers are shown in the State list of post offices in the Official <strong>Postal</strong> Guide,<br />

which, cloth bound, may be purchased frum the Disbursing Clerk, Post Office Department, 'Washington, D. C., for 65 cents, delivered<br />

to any address. Zone keys making maps unnecessary are furnished free to purchasers of the Guide. To ascertain in which<br />

zone a post office is located from the office of mailing, first find the unit number of the office of address and then refer to the parcel<br />

post zone key fur the mailing office.<br />

The local Me applies to parcels mailed under the following conditions:<br />

(I) At any poet office for local delivery at such office.<br />
