<strong>Workshop</strong> on Linux
The Linux operating system has become one of the major operating systems in use
today, bringing to the PC all power and flexibility of a Unix orkstation
as well as a complete set of Internet applications and a fully functional
desktop interface. We don't like to admit that Microsoft is ruling this market, so
plenty of alternatives have been started over the last couple of years to make Linux
an acceptable choice as a workstation, providing an easy user interface and MS
compatible office applications like word processors, spreadsheets, presentations
and the like.
On the server side, Linux is well-known as a stable and reliable platform,
providing database and trading services for companies like Amazon, the wellknown
online bookshop, US Post Office, the German army and many others.
Especially Internet providers and Internet service providers have grown fond of
Linux as firewall, proxy- and web server, and you will find a Linux box within
reach of every UNIX system administrator who appreciates a comfortable
management station. Clusters of Linux machines are used in the creation
of movies such as "Titanic", "Shrek" and others. In post offices, they are
the nerve centers that route mail and in large search engine, clusters are used
toperform internet searches. These are only a few of the thousands of heavy-duty
jobs that Linux is performing day-to-day across the world.
It is also worth to note that modern Linux not only runs on workstations, mid- and
high-end servers, but also on "gadgets" like PDA's, mobiles, a shipload of
embedded applications and even on experimental wristwatches. This makes
Linux the only operating system in the world covering such a wide range of
hardware.
Objective of <strong>Workshop</strong>
To make students understand the benefits of Multi User Operating System and
have practical experience on Server management, SI plans to organize a workshop
on Linux. It will give the students an opportunity to learn and enforce it to their
field of work.
WORKSHOP DETAILS AND HIGHLIGHTS
• Scheduled on 8 th August, 2011 to 13 th August.
• <strong>Workshop</strong> will be conducted by Industrial Experts .
• 6 days workshop on Linux

• The workshop will be conducted in Engineering College Bikaner campus.
• Linux E-books will also be provided to students during workshop.
• Practical demonstration will be covered during workshop
• Participation Certificate to all students.
Why LINUX
• A Linux Distribution has thousands of dollars worth of software for no cost (or a
couple of dollars if purchased on CD)
• Linux is a complete operating system that is:
• stable - the crash of an application is much less likely to bring down the
operating system under Linux
• reliable - Linux servers are often up for hundreds of days compared with the
regular reboots required with a Windows system
• extremely powerful
• Comes with a complete development environment, including C, C++, Fortran
compilers, toolkits such as Qt and scripting languages such as Perl, Awk and sed.
A C compiler for Windows alone would set you back hundreds of dollars.
• Excellent networking facilities: allowing you to share CPUs, share modems etc;
all of which are not included or available with Windows 95.
• The ideal environment to run servers such as a web server (e.g. Apache), or an
FTP server.
• A wide variety of commercial software is available if your needs aren't satisfied
by the free software.
• An operating system that is easily upgradeable. After any length of time a typical
installation of Windows and software gets into a complete mess. Often the only
way to clear out all the debris is to reformat the hard disk and start again. Linux,
however, is much better for maintaining the system.
• Supports multiple processors as standard.
• True multi-tasking; the ability to run more than one program at the same time.

Linux File System : Understanding the locations of important directories on a Red
Hat Enterprise Linux system and navigating them from the command line
Basic & Advanced Commands: Most commonly used commands, The ins-and-outs
of redirecting output between programs and files, An introduction to some of the
most useful textprocessing utilities.
Advanced User Administration : How to create, delete, modify users, groups
Linux permissions & umask: Setting & manipulating permissions, setting defaults
permissions using umask

SUID/SGID/Sticky Bits: Advanced permissions for managing your linux system.
Sudo : Very powerful administrative tool for granting specific permissions to
specific users
Exploring Critical Configuration files : exploring critical files such as grub.conf,
fstab, inittab. Deep knowledge is essential for troubleshooting linux.
