Looking Forward, Giving Back Nancy Pindrus ‘69 talks about why she chose to make a planned gift and join the Chadbourne-Thompson Society. “Berwick Academy has been fortunate to receive bequests that dwarf what I could offer. Nevertheless, I would like to leave something in my will to BA because the school has meant so much to me. There were many exceptional people affiliated with BA, one of whom was so important in my life that my planned gift will be in honor of him, my sophomore year English teacher, Fred Dill. “I spent my freshman and sophomore years at BA, but my parents were unable to afford to send me for a third year. I spent a very unhappy and uprooted year in the Dover public school system. I still felt Berwick Academy was my school. “A large part of what held me together during that year was spending Friday nights with Fred Dill and his wife, Barbara. In the boarding school years, teachers, in addition to teaching, coaching, and leading extracurricular activities, also acted as dorm masters. It amazes me now to think that, with so little time to themselves, Fred and Barb still welcomed me, not even a BA student at that time, into their home and their lives and gave me so much of the literary talk I so needed at that time. It was an extraordinary act of generosity on their part, and I will always be grateful for it. “After my junior year, I told my parents I would drop out of school and work to earn the tuition for my senior year at Berwick. I was determined to return and graduate from there. As it turned out, I did not need to drop out and happily finished my senior year at BA. “I cherish my time at the Academy - the beauty of BA English Teacher 1966- 1969, Frederick Dill. its setting, the nurturing and attention I received. I love that I can continue to connect through our reunions and alumni gatherings in my hometown of NYC. Another BA faculty member who made a big impression on Nancy, Russ Tarason convinced BA to buy a Yashika 124G camera which he lent to Nancy. He got her started taking pictures, developing and printing fi lm. “To me it was like magic,” Nancy says. She has spent her entire career as a professional photographer (www. pindrusphotography.com).
