Appendix A – Definitions
1 acre cultivation equivalent means a suite of operations including inoculation, cultivation,
harvest, and processing sized with the capability to process and produce gallons of algal biofuel
intermediate per day. The modeled BTO baseline system described in the MYPP is conceived
around an open raceway pond. As an example, 1 acre of cultivation in the modeled baseline would
require subsequent unit operations at the following ideal scales:
Capacity
Unit
units
concentration (g/l)
(continuous)*
Pond 1 acre 0.5
Primary settling 53,453 gal/acre-day 0.5 to 10
DAF 2,673 gal/acre-day 10 to 60
Centrifuge 446 gal/acre-day 60 to 200
Homogenizer 134 gal/acre-day 200 to 200
Solvent Loop 337 gal/acre-day 5:1 solvent:dry biomass
Assumes 30% extractable
Biofuel Intermediate
8 gal/acre-day lipid and 90% extraction
(extracted lipid)
*Assumes 100% efficiency and no
blowdown/purge from recycle
This information is presented to describe the intent of BTO in establishing a 1 acre cultivation
equivalent requirement for the FOA. To meet the intent of the FOA, applicants are expected to
present their proposed system, which is clearly unlikely to exactly match the model baseline, in
comparable terms.
“Algae”, “Algal” refer to microalgae, macroalgae, and cyanobacteria. Aquatic plants such as
duckweed and eelgrass are not algae.
“Amendment” means a revision to a Funding Opportunity Announcement
"Applicant" means the legal entity or individual signing the Application. This entity or individual
may be one organization or a single entity representing a group of organizations (such as a
Consortium) that has chosen to submit a single Application in response to a Funding Opportunity
Announcement.
"Application" means the documentation submitted in response to a Funding Opportunity
Announcement.
