<strong>The</strong> effectiveness of the <strong>American</strong> artillery shredded the <strong>Mexican</strong> lines. Arista refused to send the<br />
<strong>Mexican</strong> soldiers into battle, many of whom died standing in their lines. Fire broke out on the<br />
battlefield and smoke blinded both armies for a short while. Many of the <strong>Mexican</strong> wounded on the<br />
battlefield burned to death. Both sides launched ineffective counterattacks. Arista’s infantry<br />
soldiers were quickly becoming frustrated at the killing, especially since they had no direct<br />
involvement in the battle. <strong>The</strong>y urged General Arista to withdraw from the battlefield, and he<br />
complied by heading his army toward Matamoros. <strong>The</strong> <strong>American</strong> troops won the battle and forced<br />
the <strong>Mexican</strong>s to retreat to the south. Taylor now controlled the Rio Grande, protecting Texas.<br />
