Unit Assessment–Extension<br />
Encourage the students to pursue the following topics and write an in-depth article on at least<br />
one of the two topics below. <strong>The</strong>se articles should be a minimum of three pages long.<br />
• Research and write an article on the “Niños Heroes.” Who were they Why were they<br />
famous Why are they remembered as heroes of the war Does their memory carry on<br />
today<br />
• Research and write an article on the “Battalion of the San Patricios.” This is a fascinating,<br />
little-known battalion of <strong>American</strong> soldiers who joined the <strong>Mexican</strong> army. <strong>The</strong> article<br />
must provide a comprehensive summary, to include: Who were these soldiers Why did<br />
they decide to fight for the <strong>Mexican</strong> cause What happened to them<br />
Scoring Rubric<br />
<strong>The</strong> requirements are listed above. Completing the Unit Assessment-Extension can improve a<br />
student’s overall grade or supplement a missing section of the requirements.<br />
Rubric points Description<br />
4 ....................... Each of the above requirements is met. All the work submitted must be<br />
neat, and complete. No substitutions can be made using the Unit<br />
Assessment extensions. No more than 8-10 grammatical or spelling errors<br />
can be made in all the submitted work combined. Work submitted is of<br />
exceptional quality.<br />
3 ....................... Each of the above requirements is met. All work is complete. One section<br />
can be replaced with a Unit Assessment Extension. 11-15 grammatical or<br />
spelling errors are accepted in the combined work. Work is of good to<br />
average quality.<br />
2 ....................... Each of the requirements is met. All work is complete. Two sections can<br />
be replaced with the Unit Assessment Extensions. 16-20 grammatical and<br />
spelling errors can be accepted on the combined work. Work is of average<br />
to low quality.<br />
1 ....................... Up to two of the required sections are not completed. <strong>The</strong>re are 21 or<br />
more grammatical or spelling errors in the work turned in. <strong>The</strong> work<br />
submitted is of poor quality and lacks a true understanding of the lessons<br />
in the unit.<br />
0 ....................... Three or more sections have not been submitted. Student must redo the<br />
assignment where they can receive a maximum of a two on the<br />
resubmitted work.<br />
