an incredible family beach vacation that can satisfy everyone. Some things you’ll 

want to discover for yourself, but we’d like to help you get started with a few quick

kiteboarding, hang gliding, wreck diving, sunbathing or just sit back and enjoy nature. 

Parking is free and our bridges and ferries are free too. We have numerous national 

and state parks, which are open year round and most of which are free. Our towns 

and villages, each with their own character, are filled with warm and inviting folks

130-mile stretch of barrier islands

Think of the OBX as the place that gives you a front row seat to 

the magnificence of nature. Imagine sitting in a beach chair on a 

bed of golden sand, kids playing in the rolling waves. You’ve just 

watched the sun inch away from the horizon a short time ago, 

the first sunrise you’ve seen in years. Tonight there will be a fresh 

shrimp and crab boil that everyone in your party will pitch in to 

prepare. This doesn’t feel like “just any other beach”. Separated 

by miles of water, the Outer Banks allows you to escape from the 

ordinary, and into a paradise all your own. 

The Outer Banks owe their existence to the elements. The same 

core ingredients at the heart of your perfect beach daydream 

also bring it to life. Two of the planet’s big driving ocean currents, 

the cool Labrador from the North and the warm Gulf Stream 

running up from the South, converge off our coast teeming with 

fish. Eons of underwater kneading have brought this family of 

islands up from the deep, groomed and guided by the whimsy 

of ever-present breeze. Effectively, what you are left with are 

more than 100 miles of beaches on islands a mile wide, most of 

them protected from development, preserved for recreation and 

wildlife. Always close to the water, there are no bad seats. Life

There’s plenty to do on the OBX. From climbing the highest sand dune on the east coast, 

or exploring the first national seashore to be established by the U.S. Government, to 

reeling in a big one at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, there is never a dull moment. 

On the next few pages you’ll find all the top places to see, from Duck down to Hatteras 

and everywhere in between. Explore attractions with heroic history, some of the best 

coastal landmarks on the east coast, wildlife refuges, three coastal maritime forests and 

aquatic attractions like the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island where you can 

get up-close to underwater creatures, all without a wetsuit.

Land of Beginnings 

Do a little searching about the OBX, and you’ll quickly pick up on its reputation of 

having been the first place in history where one thing or another happened. Be it 

the first flight at Kitty Hawk, the first Union victory of the Civil War, or perhaps, more 

colorful claims of piracy and heroism passed down through local families. There’s 

a legacy of new beginnings here, and no matter how bold the story, all of them 

eventually lead back to the years surrounding 1587, when England decided to investigate the 

largely unexplored American continent and set foot upon the beaches of the Outer Banks. 

Decades before Jamestown, VA or Plymouth, MA entered the American timeline, there were 

men, women and children scratching out a new life, with little more than hope and grit, on the 

island of Roanoke. Their ultimate fate has become one of our nation’s most enduring mysteries, 

a subject of conjecture and much debate. More famously referred to as “The Lost Colony,” their 

ideals and the practical lessons learned from them helped forge a path for further successful 

colonizing of North America.

People love lighthouses. They’re symbols of strength and reassurance, beacons 

of hope. And the OBX has the biggest. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse towers over 

all others at 208 feet. The Bodie Island Lighthouse and its design twin, Currituck 

Beach Lighthouse, flank this mighty sentinel. Ocracoke, the second-oldest operating 

lighthouse in the country, is akin to a grandfather. At night, their combined gaze is 

designed to provide a blanket of protection, a string of lights down the Outer 

Banks that warns ships at sea from getting too close to the beaches and perilous 

underwater sand bars known as the Diamond Shoals. By day, their different paint 

schemes help sailors know where they are. Like our familiar milepost signs on NC12. 


Our lighthouses are among the tallest in America, a necessity in the days before 

satellite navigation. You want to stay within sight of the coast, but not get too 

close. Hitting a shoal, or coming too close to shore during a dark storm has sealed 

the fates of many a ship. In fact, the Labrador and Gulf Stream currents converging 

off the OBX, the same flows that give the islands their shape and form, also leave 

behind big sand bars. Leftovers that lie just below the surface and can tear a ship 

apart in the right conditions. More than 3,000 shipwrecks have been accounted for, 

either buried under the sand, peeking out from the dunes or lying on the bottom 

of the ocean, testaments to the area’s reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

lining its shores, the three main lighthouses 

in Dare County: Cape Hatteras, Roanoke 

Island, and Bodie Island, accompanied 

by its neighbors in the north and south:

Flight 

Spread Your Wings 


Riding the wind, soaring high above the clouds like a bird has been a dream 

of mankind since people could put their dreams to paper. The Outer Banks 

has become that place where people harness the wind to experience ultimate 

freedom. Thanks to the Wright Brothers in the years 1900-1903, the OBX inherited a 

legacy of both soaring and powered flight. There are many ways you can fulfill that 

desire as part of your vacation and become part of the story that is still being written 

about the barrier islands of North Carolina. 

Back when Orville and Wilbur came here to test their flying machines, Kitty Hawk was 

the “big” town and the one from where the brothers did most of their correspondence 

with the outside world. The town of Kill Devil Hills, a few miles down the road where 

Wright Brothers National Memorial is today and where the actual first flight took place, 

didn’t exist on the map as a community. That’s why neighboring Kitty Hawk gets most 

of the history book credit as the place where the powered flights happened first. Both 

towns have some wonderful history and monuments to explore, like the Monument 

to a Century of Flight at the Aycock Brown Welcome Center. Pilots love to make a trip 

here to see where modern air travel began. 

If you want to experience the incomparable grand scheme of nature at work, you must 

see the OBX by air. There are a few air tour services available by plane or helicopter. 

For thrill seekers with a “less is more” approach, try your hand at hang gliding from 

Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast. The whole place is 

a giant time capsule to what a lot of the OBX looked like in the days of the Wrights. 

They launched from dunes just like it, at what is now the national park of their 

namesake. If you really want to go back to basics, then there’s no better 

place to see mankind’s inspiration for flight. Birdwatching is an art form on the 

Outer Banks. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is more than a dozen miles 

of pristine coastal bird sanctuary, with the nearby Cape Hatteras National 

Seashore equally as accessible for nature lovers.

favorite, Cape Hatteras, has been named one of 2014’s “Ten Best Beaches in the U.S.” 

by Dr. Beach, aka Stephen Leatherman, one of America’s biggest experts in the world 

of coastal travel. It is the 7th year in a row for Cape Hatteras on this prestigious list.

Life on the 

OBX 


In certain ways, life on the OBX is 

pretty spectacular. Our islands are 

inspired by the natural landscapes 

and with that, locally owned shops, 

galleries and restaurants have a fun 

and whimsical coastal flair. Take a trip 

to any island and you’ll find welcoming 

locals who earn their living here on the 

Outer Banks, where everything is wild 

and free. Stop and chat a while.

Life on the 

OBX 

Northern Beaches 

Hatteras Island 

Collectively called the Northern Beaches, the 

towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, 

Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head have a nice mix 

of footpaths, wooden beach crossovers and 

free public parking. There’s not “one beach” 

that everyone goes to like you might find in 

some big city beaches. Because the islands 

are generally about a mile wide, folks usually 

go from their accommodations and walk or 

drive east to the beach access that’s closest, 

or west towards the sound waters. There’s 

a bit more development here, and with that, 

more in the way of familiar conveniences, like 

accommodations, restaurants and shopping. 

If you want to go a little more rustic or get 

even closer to nature, then you may want to try 

one of the Hatteras Island villages, which are 

Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo (sometimes called the 

Tri-Villages because of their proximity to one 

another), Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. 

You have oceanfront accommodations like the 

Northern Beach towns, but the setting is a bit 

more spread out and a single coastal two-lane 

highway links them all. The major difference 

here is that you have the Cape Hatteras National 

Seashore just outside village limits, where there 

is no development at all. This is one of the most 

special places in America; just sand dunes, 

sea grasses, wildlife and a few access ramps 

for pedestrians and 4x4 vehicles to get you as 

close or far away from civilization as you wish. 


Thank goodness, there are no cities here. Just quaint towns and fishing villages, each wonderfully 

weather worn to a varying degree. Even spanning hundreds of years and despite millions of visitors, 

each town retains its own individual character. To the north, Duck and Southern Shores are the 

newest communities on the Outer Banks, populated by services of all kinds and beautiful vacation 

homes. Centrally located, the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head are more populated, 

especially in the summer, with plenty of locally owned restaurants, bars and beach shops. On 

Roanoke Island and Dare Mainland, a historical waterfront town, a commercial fishing village and 

a wildlife refuge welcome travelers from the west and introduce visitors to attractions rooted in 

history. Head south, on Hatteras Island and find a bevy of quaint, neatly isolated towns nestled right 

along the ocean. Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras: one road leads to them all. 

Roanoke Island 

Dare Mainland 

Manteo and sister community, Wanchese, have 

a flair all their own, located between the North 

Carolina Mainland and the barrier island beach 

towns. This Outer Banks island was the site of 

the first English colony in what would become 

America. Just park and explore on foot, 

Manteo’s waterfront boardwalk and marina 

with lots of outdoor dining opportunities and 

a host of locally owned fun and funky coastal 

shops. Journey to Wanchese, at the southern 

end of Roanoke Island, for front row seats to a 

commercial fishing village. Generations of local 

families pull in fresh catch daily, which end 

up on plates in restaurants around The Outer 

Banks or packed in ice and shipped around the 

world. Whether you plan your vacation around 

a Roanoke Island stay or just make the island a 

day trip during your OBX getaway, you’ll find 

lots of things to keep you busy. 

Go a little farther west where NC Highway 64 

cuts its way through the Dare Mainland and 

the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge, home to 

the howling red wolves, black bears, northernmost 

habitat of American Alligators and a 

myriad of wild creatures. While there, be sure 

to check out Buffalo City Road, once a thriving 

mill town, it was also known as the moonshine 

capital of the United States during the 1920’s 

prohibition. It was famous for “Carolina Swamp 

Juice,” which Dare County locals still tell tales 

of to this day. Visitors can find walking trails 

and kayak paths winding through the famous 

blackwater cypress swamps.

Conversations about the Outer Banks 

often turn to talk of favorite restaurants. 

It’s a natural thing, to associate a place 

with the food culture. We experience a 

destination with all of our senses and taste 

is a powerful storyteller. From indigenous 

dishes like Hatteras-style clam chowder, 

to seared fresh yellowfin tuna from the 

deep Atlantic Ocean, to the perfectly 

braised breast of a delicate game fowl, 

the effort and passion that local OBX 

chefs put into their craft is legendary. 

For the seafood purists, you’ll find a whole 

community of restaurateurs who buy 


locally sourced fish, crabs and shellfish 

fresh from the docks to bring it to you 

each day. For families with kids, there 

are so many great menus for the little 

ones without sacrificing the experience 

for parents. People come from all over 

to the Outer Banks and we’ve got diverse 

places from fine dining to family-style to 

suit the tastes of everyone in your party.

Beach 

Information & Safety 

There are over 100 miles of shoreline in Dare County 

and depending on your personal preference, you 

can find a public beach access with ample paved 

parking, modern bath houses and nearby convenience 

shops. Or you can immerse yourself in the natural 

and primitive beaches of Cape Hatteras National 

Seashore, best accessible by a 4x4 off road vehicle. 

The choice is yours, but no matter where you go 

you’ll find numerous beach and sound accesses, all 

with free parking. Just load up the car and go.
